Hi!
Congrats on the new site, sounds like it's been a f*king MASSIVE job and its certainly faster and looks like it'll have the flexibility to keep improving, so: kudos!
Just finishing reading this thread, some +1s, questions, and comments:
- Search: IMO the predictive autocomplete search feature at the top was maybe the best thing about FO; especially given how smoothly the search bar adapted to different focus (babes, board, etc). It seems like the babes search is pretty strong in the new site but the board/forum seems to have seriously suffered: no search link at the top, stuck in the corner, and unfortunately beholden to Xenforo's rules. Would it be possible to add a tooltip or something to explain how to use it better, e.g. how one had to learn to use "AND" etc? Does quotes mean 'include all terms' or 'terms in this order'? E.g. I was fixing to look up "glasses 69" but can't have 69. "rae playboy" ditto can't have Rae.
Ah, I thought you were talking about the search suggest on the site and not the board. This, unfortunately, is the xenforo design and as you use it more you get used to it. I actually am starting to like it. I think you probably need to google xenforo, maybe someone has talked a bit about it.
We ARE working on adding an "advanced search" plugin which will hopefully add more relevance to board searches. Bastards made it so you had to buy it.
- Search continued: surprising lack of hits for things like "brooke photodromm" which I'm kinda skeptical about. Feels like something that would autocomplete in a flash on the old board search. Again I'm hopeful that the flexibility will allow y'all to beef up the search power.
I assume you're still talking about the board? Again, lets see what happens when we get the advanced search plugin up and running. If we're talking about the FreeOnes site, we're starting with updating the search suggest layout first to see if we can make something that's more usable.
- "Video links have the little video icon in front of the link URL" (Petra) - good to know, cheers. WOuld still be great to be able to filter FOR photos. Petra said "Unfortunately on the old site we only tagged a link as video. So we don't have a way to filter on only photo links atm as it was either video or not video.". But on the old site you COULD filter FOR photos so why is this different? Probably I'm just misunderstanding but hopefully it can be implemented. Reckon I got 99% of my credits from tagging videos as "not photo"!
So yes, we had a button on the links for photos. But those aren't truly all photo links. What they are really is "not video links". So in "photo links" you also get cam, social, imbd, etc and so on links in addition to photos.
One thing we did do is added "types" to the links at some point. So we know if it's a cam link or an interview link etc but wasn't part of the "video yes/no" part so we have to do some magic to make it all the same thing behind the scenes and THEN once we have it all properly sorted we can add everything that doesn't have a type as "photo".
You've probably seen we have most of these in the "type" filter now. So that is the last step which is being planned very soon (I hate having to choose what has higher priority since I wanted it all yesterday!).
- Filtering: looking good, again hope it'll continue to grow. Ability to filter for AND against would be great, for all elements where it makes sense. Filtering out certain providers would be great (e.g. those where a gallery page is always a full page ad, or a list of videos with the relevant link lost in the midst). Ability to save these preferences in one's profile would be a boon.
I have a feeling the filters will always be tinkered with. Getting them to do AND/OR is on the list.
You CAN save your filtered searches already. ;-) Choose the filters you want and then click the save button that appears.
- Autologin: never worked with lastpass on the old site, not sure how well it's working now but I've not tested it exhaustively so i'll hold off on a full comment there. One thing is I believe lastpass & possibly other similar password managers struggle with flash field entries. Potentially could have a teeny username password box in classic html right at the bottom that nobody would notice but would autopopulate? Probably a crap idea!
I don't want to talk about this. Seriously, I can spend hours ranting. If you really want to know hit me up in a PM so I don't take up everyone's time with a mad woman's soapbox about her love/hate relationship with lastpass, auto login and forms.
- Save layout preferences, e.g. 96 per page. Would be nice. Ditto other prefs, pics only, jump straight to a specific tab.
Being worked on as we type this is saving your preference on row/grid, menu in or out, filters in or out (we already have this for theme color). Immediately we'll make it save as a cookie for everyone. Then the next step immediately after is to auto save the preference to your profile if you're logged in.
I don't know how easy it is to save the page you were on. Lets do baby steps here before the frontender plans how to best kill me.
- 'Automate' mentioned about the compactness: +1 for that. IDK much about writing websites but if it does turn out that the new codebase allows you more flexibility, then being able to have it all tight & small like the old site would be great - database view.
We're working on reducing some of the space right now. I just saw a proof for mobile and it's starting to look a lot better. I'm not quite sure what we're going to do with desktop yet. There's a story why it is the way it is, maybe I'll write about it someday (been thinking about starting a "project manager's diary). But, due to the feedback we already fixed the massiveness of the site on 24 inch screens. Hopefully you'll start seeing little tweaks regularly.
- Link profile pages to forum pages, another way to reintegrate the forum. IDK how true this is but it FEELS like FO has a pretty big community, or at least a semi loyal/old/grouchy one (!) - it'd be nice to try to keep it alive & healthy IMO.
We're currently trying to work out how to best do this. Unfortunately some things got pushed in front of it but the 1st step is getting people's usernames on the comments linked to their board profile. 2nd step is to figure out the next step in integrating the board and site profile to make it more 1 site.
Overall though: congrats on the rollout, the hard work is over!
It's NEVER Over
Cheers!
