Yes, because calculations involving the order of operations are a frequent problem when one attempts to reconcile payments in a checkbook.
And nobody does that anymore anyway. That's why we have online banking.

You don't need to add any parenthesis. What you wrore is totally allowed in math. If you add parenthesis it depends where you add them and the the result can change. But with no parenthesis the rule is simply to follow the order. 40+ 40= 80 x 0=0 + 1=
1
40 + (40 x 0) + 1= 41
(40 + 40) x (0 + 1)= 80
(40 + 40 x 0) + 1= 1
etc.

(40 + 40) x (0 + 1)= 80
(40 + 40 x 0) + 1= 1
etc.

80 apples multiplied by 0 = 80 apples. Started out with 80 apples. Multiplying those 80 apples by 0 does not increase nor deminish the amount.
However....
0 x 80 = 0
80 x 0 = 80
However....
0 x 80 = 0
80 x 0 = 80
and thats why the answer is 1

Thanks, but when I was in grade school there weren't such things as calculators. Not using that as an excuse though. I just never liked math after the teacher made me look like an ass in front of the class one day.
I had a huge crush on this girl and the teacher made me come up to the board and complete an equation... similar to this on in here except it was fractions. The room was dead silent as I stood there with the chalk in hand, having not a fucking clue how to complete the equation. He finally said "You don't have any idea what the hell you're doing, do you? Go sit down!"
From that day on I fucking hated math, and still do.
Can only be 41. To use the by the visitors from the US so well know PEMDAS system: Let's see: 40 + 40 x 0 + 1. Paranthesis? No. Exponents? No. Multiplication? Yes. 40 x 0 = 0. Which leaves us with 40 + 0 + 1. Division? No. Addition? Yes. 40 + 0 + 1 = 41. The End. Or as we learned in school in Germany: Punkt vor Strich. 
Let's work with your proclivities and see if that helps.
