Well my boy Jay Bruce is still running full tilt. So badass! Also Reds called Homer Bailey back up. He wasn't doing too hot down in the minors here of late but I wish him good luck.

I liked that monster HR Bruce hit for his first career jack. What a way to start what will likely be a wonderful career, a walk-off HR! And of course he won't continue hitting at a .500+ clip, (lol) but suffice it to say that so far young Mr. Bruce is enjoying the majors quite a bit!

Meanwhile, after taking 3 of 4 from the Dodgers, my Mets are winners of 5 of their last 6 games. They now go out west to face the lowly Giants for three and then the Padres, who recently took advantage winning series against the Nats and the Giants, but have otherwise had a poor season so far. This is a very crucial part of the schedule for the Mets and they really have to win a bunch of games from these struggling teams. So far, so good.

the giants certianlly could learn how to not sign free agents, witness barry 0-6 zito. but the yankees could have signed kyle loshe and livian hernadez to fill in this year while kennedy and hughes got more experince in aaa.chamberlin would be a very good to great closer not sure his pitching repotoire is good enough to start and 100 mph fastballs won't happen when he is starting. nice to see the a's and rays in first place makes me happy to see low payroll teams do well

Well, the Yankees and Brian Cashman are attempting to rebuild and win at the same time although it doesn't seem like they're doing a good job on the second one of those goals. Both Kennedy and Hughes are on the DL, Wang has been stinking it up for a number of starts now. Pettitte have blown 3 leads today. The offense has let Rasner down once too often. We'll see how Joba would do as a closer soon enough. He's going to start tomorrow. If the Yankees do not pick their game up soon, they'd be looking simply rebuilding for next year without at least Pettitte and Mussina.

the mets got crushed by the giants last night. don't fire willie fire the players who looked so lethargic and are playing to get rid of willie. the yankees counted on kennedy and hughes to soon,i expect them to go after brian fuentes and maybe another pitcher like randy wolf or ben sheets.Nice to see the reds finially getting some payoff from thier good drafts.

You think maybe the Mets were lethargic because they played a night game on Sunday, then flew cross country to play a game on Monday? They got in at 5 AM Monday morning and God only knows when they got to sleep. The league customarily gives a team a day off after playing a Sunday night game, but not this time for some reason. Plus Oliver Perez having a horrible start is really what lost this game for the Mets. I just wouldn't blame this loss on anyone except Oliver Perez, and ESPN playing with the scheduling. And to say the players are playing to get Willie fired is just ridiculous. I wouldn't worry about the Mets. Today Pedro starts against 1-8 Barry Zito. I know where my money is for this one.

senob44 explain the rest of the year then,i knew they would kill zito and i knew they got in late. they mess look like they are beliving there inflated press clipings, other than pedro, wagner and wright, i don't buy reyes current good play show me in september when it really matters. i think the mess lack heart. i can't belive i'm willing to use 3 reds pitchers in fantasy baseball and no j. cueto isn't one

Mets' season already explained, from a previous post of mine:

I think here the problem has been a combination of injuries and players being past their prime. Delgado and Beltran are not the players they used to be, and injuries to Alou, Church, Castro, Pedro and El Duque to name a few have hampered the team.

At the same time, they have not been altogether horrible, like the media would have you believe. They're right now a .500 club, and there is still plenty of time to turn things around.

Add to that the poor performance of Aaron Heilman, and you have your explanation.

The Mets have been a little more good than bad IMO, as indicated by their record. There are several good teams that have worse records than the Mets. The Tigers and Rockies for example. Everyone likes to pick on the Mets and get down on them because of their collapse last year, but I think those same people may be in for a surprise if the key players can stay healthy.

Sorry for the double post...it was too late to edit. But did everyone hear how Joba Chamberlain couldn't find the strike zone in his start? He only lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowed 4 BB but only 1 ER. Later in the game, super-relief phenom Edwar Ramirez allowed 1 hit and 3 BB in 0.0 innings. All runners eventually scored to give him four runs allowed. He was your "goat of the game" as the Yanks lost their 3rd straight.

How is Beltran allready past his prime? he is only 31-32 years old?

If you take a look at his stats (avg, RBI, HR, OBP) they really arent that bad.

Infact he about the same amount of RBI this time last year, with only a couple more HR's.

I think he will repeat around what he did last year. Maybe less HR's, but not by much.

Jose Reyes could be at more fault then Beltran. He only has 18 SB this year. Last year he had 17 in April alone.

Couple that with your crappy starters (besides Johan and Maine). Perez and Pelfrey are barely giving the team a chance to win. Plus you never know whats going to happen with Pedro. He is the one that isnt what he use to be not Beltran.

Different players peak at different times. Players who rely on speed and quickness as part of their game tend to peak earlier.

Carlos Beltran-Stolen Bases
2002:35
2003:41
2004:42
2005:17
2006:18
2007:23
2008: 7+

And the Mets are an aggressive team that runs a lot. And I don't think it is from who is batting behind him, because wherever he went, Beltran always had sluggers batting behind him. Some of the lack of stolen bases is due to injuries, which brings me to the point that Beltran has missed time due to injury each of the past 3 years.

He is also a career .280 hitter who is hitting .267 this year.

Carlos Beltran-Slugging (notice anything?)
2006:.594
2007:.525
2008:.462

Carlos is still a formidable offensive player, but his speed peaked when he was 27 and his power and hitting peaked when he was 29.

His average hasnt been over .280 in the past 4 years. He hasnt hit .280 since he has joined the mets.

And even though he isnt going to steal 40 bases anymore, his stolen bases have increased each of the past 3 years.

His slugging is down a bit, but I think he will raise that. He is a carrer .494 Slugger. His second year in the league where he was 20/20 and 100+ RBI which I think he is more then capable of doing that this year. He had his second worst slugging of his carrer (for a full season). Now you wouldnt say thats bad would you?

Well on a good note the Reds play tonight. With each game passing Ken Griffey Jr. gets closer to 600 and on his way the fuck off my team. Just 1 more baby just 1 more lol!

Well now, I never said he was bad, just past what I think was his prime. I'm still glad to have him on the Mets. He definitely contributes a lot offensively and plays a great CF.

Hey, the Brewers have won a couple against the D-Backs, too.

What place are they now in?

Damned if I know. The local paper doesn't have up to date standings and I have dialup, so looking online is a pain.

Besides, I don't care. Really, I don't. I'm just happy when they win and/or play a good game.

Well if you care even just a little bit, honey, the Brewers are in 3rd place at 32-28 (better than the Mets) and 6 games back of the Cubs.
