100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time

Try again.

Hendrix doesn't have the chops, or the catalog to be considered the greatest guitarist ever. Was he influential? Yup. So was Kurt Cobain

I hate these lists. It's too subjective.

A lot of people would tell you though, without out Hendrix there is no (insert great guitarist).

Link Wray kicked more ass than all of those put together (and 90% of them probably wouldn´t even be playing guitar if it wasn´t for him).

This list is horrible... no Eric Johnson? I thought the keyword was "Greatest". Hell even Vince Gill, can pick the shit out of a guitar as well as half the guitarists named... :(

what a fuckin crock of shit! How can they say this is a list of the top 100 greatest and Darrell Abbot isn't anywhere in the list...let alone the top half of the list at the very least?

Dimebag is a great Mosh Guitar Player, but he has no dynamics, good power chords player good shredder - but quitar playing is about being versatile, which he is not in my opinion :2 cents:

I think those guitarists that got to vote on the best are a good mix and the results are what I would pick, too.

You cant really have a 100 greatest list of anything that people will agree on I think :dunno:
Especially with something like this, which will always come down to personal opinion
I was half expecting, 'no Petrucci, zomg!', or 'Jack White, really?'
But Marty Friedman is there, so I dont mind :D

Would be cooler if you'd added quotes/links/sources to the guitarists expressing their admiration for their favourite guitarists. No offence, but it's the internet - people make stuff up all the time.

I don't think mods would have minded the 5 link limit either, since they wouldn't be porn links...

His story is quite amazing though. He could not read music and relayed information to his band via color. Also he was quite far ahead of his time with all the sounds he made his guitar make without any effects pedals. Although that doesn't make him "The Greatest of all time" but how do you classify that?

Three greats with 3 completely different styles:

Jimi Hendrix

Eric Clapton

Zach Wylde

Looks like 100 guys all kissing each others butts.

Seriously...John Lennon was a great songwriter. But a great guitarist? Gimme' a frikin' break!!!

i said it before an im saying it again shouldnt the list be made up of guitarist that would be the last 100 in a kind of elimination contest!?!?!!? that way personal taste dousnt come into play! as in a massive PLAY off WHO WOULD BE LEFT! as im SURE saying you are a MASTER of an instament you SHOULD be able to play OUTSIDE your own style and comfort zone! i can tell ya BUCKETHEAD would be still standing!!!!

But so would John Mayer, and Jack White. Both write absolutely terrible music IMO but they are both amazing at playing many styles of music. Both are great outside of their main stream image.

If I did, it would've taken longer than 2 hrs, maybe I'll add them tomorrow, if I got time.

This is really more of a fan list, which I believe alot of people are recognizing. The biggest driver of who is listed depends on who was asked.

I see examples of a 'fan' voting - e.g. Malcolm Young and Billy Duffy. They are both great players to be sure but among the 100 greatest guitarists of all time? Kirk Hammett but not James Hetfield (a voter mind you). Marty Friedman but not Dave Mustaine?

I don't disagree with many of the names on the list (Tipton/Downing, Vai, B.B. King, Satriani, EVH, Slash, RR, Jimi, Stevie Ray, Beck, Page, Malmsteen, Clapton to name but a varied few) as true guitarists but I think what alot of us are taking exception to is who isn't on the list. Dimebag is a prime example. Also, Ry Cooder is nowhere to be found. Eric Johnson anyone? What about Buckethead? These are phenomenal players and I could name many more who seem to have taken a back seat to more 'popular' players.

It's a great list, but I think it should read 100 of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Who compiled the list of these so called greatest living guitarists, that's what I want to know.

Whoever you are, you're a dump. Get my bags.

I feel it is my duty to mention Omar Rodriguez Lopez (TMV), Adam Jones (Tool), Joe Duplantier (Gojira), Paul Waggoner (BtBaM) and about a dozen other guys who are better than half of these clowns.

Get my bags! Get my bags!
