The tradition of "Krampus" is very somilar to another german wintertime tradition, the "Klausentreiben" (literally: "Chasing Klauses"). for starters, here is a video. Don't worry if you don't understand it, it is in a southern accent from Germany, some of my fellow german people have a hard time understanding it, too :)

The "Klausen" are of course a group of the local young men who dress up in furs and such. The concept is:

In the dark and winter times, the people in the middle ages were very afraid of evil beings, spirits and so on. In order to prevent fopr one of those evil buggers to take the village as his settlement, they made these attempts of fooling him the place was already heavily occupied by some beasts he would not want to do business with.

Another detail: When you ask a Bavarian, he will most likely insist he is not actually german, he is rather, "ALSO german, somewhat by chance. The german form of the Republicans even have a bavarian party that is not officially the Christian Democratic Union, it is the Christian Social Union and the first one does not operate and candidate in Bavaria. They work toether, but every once in a while some loony CSU politician will come up with stupid propositiobs, just to spite the big ****** and to show they don't fool around.

The similarities to the USA are indeed bigger than most imagine
 
One of these years I'm gonna remember to necrobump this thread before Krampusnacht instead of four days after. And I'll make it to a Krampusnacht celebration, too.

Ace, here is a new trip for you: Similar to the "Klausentreiben", there is the "Bärbeltreiben", in a few places. "Treiben" is for "Driving", as in moving a herd of cattle, and "Bärbel" is the cosy name for "Barbara"

And as you see, nowadays, it is highly regulated, too. No secret buttons on those sticks, and every Bärbel must be in those lists!
 
I didn't realize the Krampus activities started so early but hundreds of ***** men dressed as Krampus have been at it in Austria. The festivities have spread to several large cities in the US and I would love to participate but I'm pretty sure it won't end well here.
