Black History Month

This is a sensitive issue, so I'm going to ask you not to be a stupid douche. If you are, go fuck yourself.

Second disclaimer: This issue is most pertinent to American members. Everyone is, of course, welcome to comment, keeping that in mind.

So what about "Black History Month?" Is this something that should continue to be promoted? Perhaps it is time to let this fade into obscurity, and follow the words of the wise man in the video below.

Now, to be clear, I'm not saying we should not celebrate black history. I'm just wondering if the time has come to drop the special ceremony that we've awarded it, as it seems to accomplish nothing but draw attention to the fact that most of our history texts don't do enough to acknowledge the contribution that black people have made. What if, rather than a Black History Month, we rewrote school textbooks, and held ourselves all more accountable to remember to teach that blacks are just as much a part of this nation's foundation as whites, yellows, tans, and reds?

Discuss. (In a civil way.)

Even when I was younger, I never understood what's so significant about setting aside one month a year for Black History, Breast Cancer, etc. Why do they have to be limited to one month to be given such recognition, can't they be important and noticed throughout the year without reminding everyone that X month is special for X reason?

double post.

Oh what the hell, I'll expound.

Black History Month is patronizing. Just like the Rooney Rule in the NFL is. "We're already set on a coach we want to hire but we're required to interview you because you're black. But thanks for coming in. Don't call us because we won't be calling you."

Time for it to go. This is, in a nutshell, how I see it. Blacks bitch and moan about how they're discriminated against because they're black, and they want everyone else to think of them as "Americans" rather than "African-Americans," yet they insist on having a whole month devoted to them saying, "Hey! We're black!" Well, which do they want: differentiation (discrimination), or equality?

I hope you say this again in March - Women's History Month, May - Asian & Older American's Month, June - Gay & Lesbian Pride Month; Caribbean American Heritage Month, Sept./Oct. - Hispanic Heritage Month, November - Native American Heritage Month.

I can more or less see both sides of the argument.

On the one hand I do tend to believe that black history is generally ignored or overlooked. I mean, we just had a movie focused on the Emancipation Proclamation and yet it didn't feature much in the way of black actors, nor have any real focus on slavery, the reason behind it all. That seems... questionable.

On the other hand it does seem rather patronizing. It seems like a convenient way around dealing with the real issue. It seems like bandaid slapped on the problem because it's easier than actually taking the time to make school curriculums more inclusive and representative.

So I'm kind of torn here. I guess the tie-breaker would be the fact that Morgan Freeman just told me he wants Black History Month gone, and with his dulcet tones I tend to believe everything he says. If he turned to me and said, "***, I think you need to lick my asshole right about now." Well, I'd probably respond, "Mr. Freeman, sir, that's not really my kind of thing." Then he'd say to me, "***, I think I know best. I'm Morgan Freeman." Then I'd find myself tongue-deep in the man.

I think all that **** needs to go too. I think a group of people can feel proud of their heritage without ******* it down everyone else's throat.

Don't care if I get called a douche on here...I'm going to say this...I think all Americans should know a bit about black history. Not everything but a lil. Just about every American today knows and read about WW2...and General Patton...and Dwight D Eisenhower...baby boomers...Vday sex and all of that ****. Yet, not too sure if many people remember or read about strong American figures like David Walker, Theodore S. Wright, Henry Bibb, Harriet Tubman or Robert Purvis. Just my take on this that's all.

***

Shorty:"Look, I already know and read about Morgan Freeman and Dr King back in school, and look what they did for America. Plus I watched the film Django Unchained yesterday and seen the damn flic uh...three times now and know just about everything about black folk and slavery."
DC: "Look Shorty...The entire damn population of Guam has heard, watched and know about Morgan Freeman, DR King, and Django Unchained altogether. So get it straight.
Shorty: Yeah? Well OK smart guy alright...think you're perfect huh? k then...Soooo who's this Garrett Morgan dude huh? Like seriously, who is he? What's so special about him? And what the hell did he do for black folks in America huh?"
DC: (pauses, thinks, looks at the *** then finally says) "To tell you the truth Shorty, I don't really know...but just for that, think im gonna take the time to read about him myself..."

Lesson of this story is, know some black history.
hehe

i guess its about time to check out some black pornstars again.

you people always guilt me into doing it, and ive fucking had it.

I don't think it's such a bad concept. A little history learning never hurt anyone. It's less time spent having Hollywood and American Idol **** shoved up my ass.

Yes.

White history month is needed. Since whites will be the minority soon.
Unless something changes. Which I hope it does.

Black history is indeed American history and to call special attention to it by giving it its own "month" trivializes it to a large degree from my perspective....kinda like "Earth Day" trivializes environmental responsibility. Get rid of it.

morgan freeman is a wise man, it's time things not to get divided into skin color, but into smart and dumb, good and bad.

I'd make a statement on this very topic but the last time I did, I was ****** soooooooo...................
