dude i am a musician i been playing guitar for 8 years my band is at myspace u can find our url is twistedfateie
I taught myself how to play. the easiest way is to learn to read tabliture which is simple. then get a guitar and find tabs online for songs you wanna play. then just keep practicing and learning. and other than that just take lessons

This might be too advanced for a beginner, but there are lessons for beginners on there. I've been playing classical guitar for almost 12 years, and, aside from Freeones, this is my favorite website. Premium Link Upgrade

LOL, I feel so bad! I've not even picked the thing up in quite awhile. Cept to mess around with it here and there. I got new strings for it and some picks. Dunno if I mentioned that last time or not.

I think I'm gonna sign up for lessons when I get some more money to spare. This way I don't develop any bad habits!

Look in a pawn shop. Sometimes you'll get a good item at a good price there. If you have a favorite cd go to a music store buy the song book of that cd. It has diagrams above the words that shows you where to place your fingers to play the songs, (this is if you can't read music) it helps a lot. Then Ape is right...practice,practice,practice.

Use the lessons to learn theory and not how to play songs. As a ***, my parents made me take piano lessons. Never cared for them since I was ****** to go and practice but years later, when I picked up the guitar, some of the scales and stuff came back from memory and made it easier to practice some scales and appegios on the guitar. As for learning songs, I bought a tab book but noticed errors when I played with the song(going through the stereo). That's where developing an ear is important.

No I'd use the lessons for the right way to play. Stumming, fingering, etc...also I think it would be easier to learn chords that way than watching a vid on youtube.

Coming from someone who has taught guitar lessons for awhile, I have to suggest guitar lessons. You tube, and online guitar lessons, just do not cut it. They can help supplement some of what you'll need to know, but you'd be hard pressed to find that on youtube. The only online lessons I can sit down and suggest would be Jimmy Bruno's Guitar Institute. But you'd have to love jazz.

Books are okay, but honestly I don't recommend 95% of what's out there. They are just method books that don't really offer any insight on what they tell you to do, they just say do it.

I would just stress finding a good teacher, who has a lot of knowledge, but most of all a personality you can get along with. You'll play more if you enjoy going to your lessons. And I know all these things sound a bit obvious, but you have no idea how important even the most obvious things are, especially in music.

^ I figured lessons are a great way to get started. Other than just fucking around once in a while. money is tight and my job is hit or miss on hours. Some weeks I'll get 50 + hours others I'll get only 30. Impossible to budget for anything.

Won't be this year. But I figure once I take some lessons and apply that with all that has been said here in this thread. I'll start to have fun with it.

i never took a lesson a day in my life. but some people need the instruction. a chord chart and a guitar always near me is all i ever needed. ive always been self taught. piano, drums, and now guitar.
