Well, I would thank Digital/MIT more because I believe they first produced an X11 program that would display backgrounds on a login screen and as a desktop background -- well before Windows added this feature (and Mac I'm fairly certain).
I.e., a lot of Windows "innovations" come from either the community software developed world or, more limited to the early days, direct use of Apple source code (by contract/license).
