Not to be anymore of an old fogey than absolutely necessary i have to say that back in ancient times when I joined Freeones(after lurking for a few years) I remember the talk section very lively with a lot of participation. Not much nastiness as I remember. Got crappy later about 10 years ago(and membership dropped off) and I stayed away till recently.(some probably wish I had lost the key)

When "that" began years ago, FreeOnes had close to 90,000 active members. I don't know how many there are now, but when we stopped using vBulletin, it was less than 10,000 active.
I was against that experiment from the start because of what happened in the early 2000's. I was a member of a forum called General Mayhem. It had over 1 million active members when the admins decided to allow any and all trolling/flaming. In a span of 18 months, the active member base went from well over 1 million to about 800. Not long after, they took that board down.

Same thing seemed to happen at Strangeland. Our only rule was don't be rude to the chicks, and a couple of basic things, like spammers and ****, but it got to be chaotic to the point we just put up a battle thread, so people could just go nuts in there, and quit screwing up the rest of the board. But it was already to late.
FreeOnes went from one extreme in the early days where perma-bans were dished out for relatively ***** infractions, to what surmounted to a hands-off approach except in the most heinous of circumstances. Maybe find a happy medium, where the true dip shits are permanently jettisoned but reasonable people who might fuck up occasionally have an opportunity to correct their bad behavior? Outright trolls and antagonists have no motivation to self-correct if there aren't any consequences.
