Your Best Song (with lyrics)

Temple Of The Dog- Hunger Strike

I don't mind stealing bread
From the mouths of decadence
But I can't feed on the powerless
When my cup's already overfilled
But it's on the table
The fire is cooking
And they're farming babies
While the slaves are working
The blood is on the table
And their mouths are choking
But I'm growing hungry

Some really nice picks Big Lu. One by U2 is one of my fav songs of all time. And Sutty, that My Immortal song is one of my favorites of all the recent songs to be released. Keep on rockin and rollin!!:nanner: :hatsoff:

The Who-Behind Blue Eyes

I totally agree with ya.

But one of my favs has to be Queensryche: Someone Else, just piano and vocals. Very uncommon for a rock/metal band.

Verse:
When I fell from grace
I never realized
how deep the flood was around me.
A man whose life was toil
was like a kettle left to boil,
and the water left scars on me.
I know now who I am.
If only for a while,
I recognize the changes.
I feel like I did
before the magic wore thin
and the "baptism of stains" began.

Pre chorus:
They used to say
I was nowhere, man,
heading down was my destiny.
But yesterday, I swear,
that was someone else not me.

Chorus:
Here I stand
at the crossroads edge,
afraid to reach
out for eternity,
One step, when I look down,
I see someone else not me.
Looking back and I see
someone else.

Verse:
All my life
they said I was going down,
but I'm still standing,
stronger, proud.
And today I know
there's so much more I can be.

Chorus:
From where I stand
at the crossroads edge,
there's a path leading out to sea.
And from somewhere deep in my mind,
sirens sing
out loud
songs of doubt
as only they know how.
But one glance back reminds, and I see,
someone else not me.

I keep looking back
at someone else...
me?

I may not agree with what you think about Nirvana, but I respect it and I'm not holding it against you. I just don't feel Kurt Cobain did anything for music except ruin it, and hopefully for not forever.

I would have to agree with this comment. Speaking from a musician's point of view, Nirvana and a lot of other "grunge" bands hurt the entire music scene. And I don't mean that in any disrespect for any fans of Nirvana, but when they and others alike hit the scene, the recording industry stopped putting a bunch of backing supporting their acts. Tours went down, stage shows went down, albumn sales went down. Record companies got greedy and wanted to put out anyone with a single song to sell for 2-6 months, and then toss them aside and move on to the next "big hit".
I don't want to sound like I'm trying to put total blame just on Nirvana, it was a musical movement in history. In my view, just not in the right direction. But meerly my opinion, didn't mean to offend anyone.
Heck, I listen to bands like Dream Theater, Queensryche, Deep Purple, Rush, etc. etc....bands that hardly anyone knows, so it's not like I'm trying to say this music is better than that, but I think they creativity of music overall went downhill around that point in time.

Enough griping, back to the thread. Here's another great Queensryche song: Take Hold Of The Flame

Verse:
We see the light of those who find
A world has passed them by
To late to save a dream
that's growing cold
We realize that fate must hide
its face
From those who try
To see the distant signs
of unforetold
Oh...
oh, take hold

From a haze
came a rage of thunder
Distant signs
of darkness on the way
Fading cries
scream of pain and hunger
But in the night
the light will guide your way

Chorus:
So take hold of the flame
Don't you see life's a game
So take hold of the flame
You've got nothing to lose,
but everything to gain

Verse:
Ride, to a place beyond our time
Reach, for the edges of your mind,
and you are there
See, that the light will find its way
Back to a place where it will stay,
make it stay

Solo:

Verse:
Throw
down the chains of oppression that bind you
With the air of freedom the flame grows bright
We are the strong, the youth united
We are one,
we are children of the light

Chorus:
So take hold of the flame
Don't you see life's a game
So take hold of the flame
You've got nothing to lose,
but everything to gain

Some People Fly-Queensryche also

Verse:
Used to be a time we held the world.
Wrapped 'round our finger tips
Laughing at what others missed.
Someday,
yesterday
The magic we felt went away.
Grow up somebody said...
tell me where it's gone
so I can go find it now.

Pre chorus:
I can't live your way.
Go ahead without me
I'll find my own way

Chorus:
Some people fly...
and some of us worry
about touching the sun with wings.
I know if I try
I'll get where I'm going,
Keeping my eyes on the sky.

Verse:
The box you live within is strong
and it's up to you to see beyond
the comfort zone you've grown to love.
There's more to life than that.
The expectations that you hold
will keep you down and make you old
If you can't see what I'm trying to say,
maybe you just need to wear my shoes for awhile.

Pre chorus:
I can't live your way.
Go ahead without me.
I'll find my own way

Chorus:
Some people fly...
and some of us worry I'd risk it all
to have wings.
I know if I try I'll get where I'm going,
Keeping my eyes on the sky.

Bridge:
While you sit there
and think about it,
there's another unfolding their wings.
I can tell you what it's like,
but, until you try,
you'll never see what I mean.

Solo:

Chorus:
Some people fly...
and some of us worry
I'll touch the sky with my wings.
I know if I try
I'll get where I'm going,
Keeping my eyes on the sky.
Keeping my eyes,
keeping my eyes on the sky.

Spirit Carries On:
Music by Dream Theater
Lyrics by John Petrucci

Nicholas:
Where did we come from?
Why are we here?
Where do we go when we die?
What lies beyond
And what lay before?
Is anything certain in life?

They say, "Life is too short,"
"The here and the now"
And "You're only given one shot"
But could there be more,
Have I lived before,
Or could this be all that we've got?

If I die tomorrow
I'd be allright
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on

I used to be frightened of dying
I used to think death was the end
But that was before
I'm not scared anymore
I know that my soul will transcend

I may never find all the answers
I may never understand why
I may never prove
What I know to be true
But I know that I still have to try

If I die tomorrow
I'd be allright
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on

Victoria:
"Move on, be brave
Don't weep at my grave
Because I am no longer here
But please never let
Your memory of me disappear"

Nicholas:
Safe in the light that surrounds me
Free of the fear and the pain
My questioning mind
Has helped me to find
The meaning in my life again
Victoria's real
I finally feel
At peace with the girl in my dreams
And now that I'm here
It's perfectly clear
I found out what all of this means

If I die tomorrow
I'd be allright
Because I believe
That after we're gone
The spirit carries on

Finally Free:
Music by Dream Theater
Lyrics by Mike Portnoy

The Miracle:
Friday evening
The blood still on my hands
To think that she would leave me now
For that ungrateful man

Sole survivor
No witness to the crime
I must act fast to cover up
I think that there's still time

He'd seem hopeless and lost with this note
They'll buy into the words that I wrote

"This feeling inside me
Finally found my love, I've finally broke free
No longer torn in two
I'd take my own life before losing you"

Victoria:
Feeling good this Friday afternoon
I ran into Julian
Said we'd get together soon

He's always had my heart
He needs to know
I'll break free of the Miracle
It's time for him to go

This feeling inside me
Finally found my love, I've finally broke free
No longer torn in two
He'd kill his brother if he only knew

Their love renewed
They'd rendezvous
In a pathway out of view
They thought no one knew
Then came a shot out of the night

The Sleeper:
One last time
We'll lay down today
One last time
Until we fade away
One last time
We'll lay down today
One last time
We fade away

As their bodies lie still
And the ending draws near
Spirits rise through the air
All their fears disappear, it all becomes clear
A blinding light comes into view
An old soul exchanged for a new
A familiar voice comes shining through

Nicholas:
This feeling inside me
Finally found my life, I'm finally free
No longer torn in two
I learned about my life by living through you

This feeling inside me
Finally found my life, I'm finally free
No longer torn in two
Living my own life by learning from you

We'll meet again my friend someday soon

To Live Forever:
Dream Theater

If I'd started from the top
And worked my way down
There'd be no reason
To live forever
To live forever

The starvation has turned
Me outside in
And the wind has blown
Me halfway across the world
Across the world

Why was I born
In an age of distrust
I'd offer some change
For a photograph

It will always stay the same
Always be the same

Until I show a desire for revenge
My hunger will waste me to sleep
As long as I have to die in the attempt
Then there is no reason
To live forever

Until I show a desire for revenge
As long as I have to die in the attempt
If I have to die in the attempt
Then there is no reason
No reason
No reason
To live forever

To live forever

Alternate ending for the demo version:

I found you where
They left you there
A passing word that's gone forever

And searching my memory for answers
I saw the words of a letter you wrote
She said 'You don't have to live forever,
You don't want to live forever.'
And everything's changed and now I don't want
To live forever

Voices:
Dream Theater
John Petrucci

'Love, just don't stare'
He used to say to me
every Sunday morning
The spider in the window
The angel in the pool
The old man takes the poison
Now the widow makes the rules

'So speak, I'm right here'
She used to say to me
not a word, not a word
Judas on the ceiling
the Devil in my bed
I guess Easter's never coming
So I'll just wait inside my head

Like a scream but sort of silent
living off my nightmares

Voices repeating me
'Feeling threatened?
We reflect your hopes and fears.'
Voices discussing me
'Others steal your thoughts
they're not confined
within your mind.'

Thought disorder
Dream control
Now they read my mind on the radio
But where was the Garden of Eden?

I feel elated
I feel depressed
Sex is death, Death is sex
Says it right here on my Crucifix

Like a scream but sort of silent
living off my nightmares

Voices protecting me
'Good behavior
brings the Savior
to his knees.'
Voices rejecting me
'Others steal your thoughts
they're not confined
to your own mind.'

"I don't wanna be here, 'cause of my
suffering, 'cause of my illness.
Only love is worth having, only
love is what matters, loving every
people on equal terms. "
"You've got to know who you're
dealin' with because, like a stranger,
a-heh, just might come in through
here with a gun... and then, what
would you do? (Heh.)"
"Everything is immaterial..."
"'n' you know that reality is immaterial."
"This is not reality..."

I'm kneeling on the floor
staring at the wall
like the spider in the window
I wish that I could speak
Is there fantasy in refuge?
God in politicians?
Should I turn on my religion?
These demons in my head tell me to

I'm lying here in bed
Swear my skin is inside out
Just another Sunday morning

Seen my diary on the newsstand
Seems we've lost the truth to quicksand
It's a shame no one is praying
'Cause these voices in my head
keep saying...

'Love, just don't stare.'
'Reveal the Word when you're
supposed to'
Withdrawn and introverted
Infectiously perverted
'Being laughed at and confused
keeps us pleasantly amused
enough to stay.'

Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting
Twentieth century Icon bleeding
Willing to risk Salvation
to escape from isolation

I'm witness to redemption
heard you speak but never listened
Can you rid me of my secrets?
Deliver us from Darkness?

Voices repeating me
'Feeling threatened?
We reflect your hopes and fears.'
Voices discussing me
Don't expect your own Messiah
This neverworld which you desire
is only in your mind.

Dream Theater:
Hollow Years
John Petrucci

He's just the kind of man
You hear about
Who leaves his family for
An easy out
They never saw the signs
He never said a word
He couldn't take another day

Carry me to the shoreline
Bury me in the sand
Walk me across the water
And maybe you'll understand

Once the stone
You're crawling under
Is lifted off your shoulders
Once the cloud that's raining
Over your head disappears
The noise that you'll hear
Is the crashing down of hollow years

She's not the kind of girl
You hear about
She'll never want another
She'll never be without
She'll give you all the signs
She'll tell you everything
Then turn around and walk away

Carry me to the shoreline
Bury me in the sand
(Into the waves)
Walk me across the water
And maybe you'll understand

Once the stone
You're crawling under
(Once the stone)
Is lifted off your shoulders
Once the cloud that's raining
Over your head disappears
The noise that you'll hear
Is the crashing down of hollow years

Carry me to the shoreline
Bury me in the sand
(Into the waves)
Walk me across the water
And maybe you'll understand

Once the stone
You're crawling under
Is lifted off your shoulders
Once the cloud that's raining
Over your head disappears
The noise that you'll hear
Is the crashing down of hollow years

Once the stone
You're crawling under
Once the stone
You're crawling under
(The sound you'll hear,)
Once the stone
(the crashing)
You're crawling under
(down of hollow years)
Once the stone
You're crawling under
Once the stone
You're crawling under
Once the stone
You're crawling under
(The sound you'll hear, the crashing down of hollow years)

Dream Theater:
Just Let Me Breathe
Mike Portnoy

Open your eyes
And turn off your mind
Step right up folks
"Step right up folks"
and you will find
A growing trend
An epidemic
Spread with zen
And hypodermics, yeah
Yeah

Just close your mind
You can find all you need with your eyes

The big machines take care of you
Until you kill yourself
And then the sales go through the roof
Calculated, formulated
Feed my head with simple thoughts
And let me breathe instead of being taught
All bottled up and tearing at the seams
I'm bored
Just let me breathe

A daily dose of eMpTyV
Will flush your mind right down the drain
Shannon Hoon and Kurt Cobain,
Make yourself a household name, yeah-yeah
Yeah

Just close your mind
You can find all you need with your eyes

The big machines take care of you
Until you kill yourself
And then the sales go through the roof
Calculated, formulated
Feed my head with simple thoughts
And let me breathe instead of being taught
All bottled up and tearing at the seams
I'm bored
Just let me breathe

Strike up your best angst ridden posture, whoa
Manufactured anger
Let's not forget my legacy
All my heroes have failed me
Now they're dead and buried, yeah

Just close your mind
You can find all you need with your eyes

The big machines will take care of you
Until the fashion fades
And the checks go through
My bankroll's red
And my face is blue
And still they'll turn their backs on me for someone new

Feed my head
With some real thoughts
And let me think instead
Of being taught
I'll say things
You won't believe
Just stand back
Just let me breathe...

Dream Theater:
Metropolis pt.1
John Petrucci

The smile of dawn
Arrived early May
She carried a gift from her home
The night shed a tear
To tell her of fear
And of sorrow and pain
She'll never outgrow

Death is the first dance, eternal

There's no more freedom
The both of you will be confined to this mind

I was told there's a miracle for each day that I try
I was told there's a new love that's born for each one that has died
I was told there'd be no one to call on when I feel alone and afraid
I was told if you dream of the next world
You'll find yourself swimming in a lake of fire

As a child, I thought I could live without pain without sorrow
But as a man I've found it's all caught up with me
I'm asleep yet I'm so afraid

Somewhere like a scene from a memory
There's a picture worth a thousand words
Eluding stares from faces before me
It hides away and will never be heard of again

Deceit is the second without end

The city's cold blood teaches us to survive
Just keep my heart in your eyes and we'll stay alive

The third arrives...

Before the leaves have fallen
Before we lock the doors
There must be a third and last dance
This one will last forever
Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles
She's taken you to your home

It can only take place
When the struggle between our children has ended
Now the Miracle and the Sleeper know that the third is love

Love is the Dance of Eternity

Metallica:
Dyer's Eve

Dear Mother
Dear Father
What is this hell you have put me through
Believer
Deceiver
Day in day out live my life through you
Pushed onto me what's wrong or right
Hidden from this thing that they call life

Dear Mother
Dear Father
Every thought I'd think you'd disapprove
Curator
Dictator
Always censoring my every move
Children are seen but are not heard
Tear out everything inspired

Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality
I'm living blindly

Dear Mother
Dear Father
Time has frozen still what's left to be
Hear nothing
Say nothing
Cannot face the fact I think for me
No guarantee, it's life as is
But damn you for not giving me my chance

Dear Mother
Dear Father
You've clipped my wings before I learned to fly
Unspoiled
Unspoken
I've outgrown that fucking lullaby
Same thing I've always heard from you
Do as I say not as I do

Innocence
Torn from me without your shelter
Barred reality
I'm living blindly

I'm in hell without you
Cannot cope without you two
Shocked at the world that I see
Innocent victim please rescue me

Dear Mother
Dear Father
Hidden in your world you've made for me
I'm seething
I'm bleeding
Ripping wounds in me that never heal
Undying spite I feel for you
Living out this hell you always knew

Hey man, don't worry about posting too much, that's what great about music, the ideas, joy and creativity are endless. I really enjoy Queensryche also, i think they were a really underrated band. I don't know much about Dream Theater though, could you perhaps describe their music for me? Thanx. As far as their lyrics go though, they seem really great and creative. I understand what you are saying about the grunge movement ruining music, and although i disagree and think the "bubblegum pop"/boyband movement ruined music, i respect your opinion. I personally think that the thing that ruins music is the executives and big money corporations who seem like they have a quota for what needs to be put out, and thus, creativity takes a backseat to what is so called "marketable". They are marketing an image, not music. I've said it before, and ill say it again, i don't care how the person(s) look, as long as they are original, creative, and make good music. That's my 2 cents. Keep on rockin and rollin!!

I think this songs fits good in here:

NoFX

"Lori Meyers"

Lori Meyers used to live upstairs
Our parents had been friends for years
Almost every afternoon we'd play forbidden games
At nine years old there's no such thing (as shame)
It wasn't recognition of her face, what brought me back was a familiar mark
As it flashed across the screen
I bought some magazines, some video tape scenes
Incriminating acts, I felt that I could save her

"Who are you to tell me how to live my life?
You think I sell my body; I merely sell my time.
I ain't no Cinderella, I ain't waitin' for no prince,
To save me in fact until just now I was doin' just fine.
And on and on.."

"I know what degregation feels like
I felt it on the floor at the factory
Where I worked long before, I took control now I answer to me
The 50K I make this year will go anywhere I please
Where's the problem?"

Iron Maiden - Infinite Dreams (1988)

Infinite dreams I can't deny them
Infinity is hard to comprehend
I couldn't hear those screams
Even in my wildest dreams

Suffocation waking in a sweat
Scared to fall asleep again
Incase the dream begins again
Someone chasing I cannot move
Standing rigid nightmare's statue
What a dream when will it end
And will I transcend?

Restless sleep the minds in turmoil
One nightmare ends another fertile
Getting to me so scared to sleep
But scared to wake now, in too deep

Even though its reached new heights
I rather like the restless nights
It makes me wonder it makes me think
There's more to this I'm on the brink
It's not the fear of what's beyond
It's just that I might not respond
I have an interest almost craving
But would I like to get too far in?

It can't be all coincidence
Too many things are evident
You tell me you're an unbeliever
Spiritualist? Well me I'm neither
But wouldn't you like to know
The truth
Of what's out there to have the proof
And find out just which side
You're on
Where would you end in Heaven or
In Hell?

Help me. Help me to find my true
Self without seeing the future
Save me, save me from torturing
Myself even within my dreams

There's got to be just more to it
Than this
Or tell me why do we exist
I'd like to think that when I die
I'd get a chance another time
And to return and live again
Reincarnate, play the game
Again and again and again

Good one Joe!

Here's another for you guys.......

Iron Maiden- The Trooper

You take my life and I'll take yours too
You fire your musket and I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand there's no turning back.
The bugle sounds and the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As I plunge on into certain death.
The horse he sweats with fear we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race towards the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall
We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day.
We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds take my horse below.
And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear I draw my parting groan

Metallica- Master of Puppets

End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your death's construction

Taste me, you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Needlework the way, never you betray
Life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
Chop your breakfast on a mirror

Taste me you will see
More is all you need
You're dedicated to
How I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master

Master, master
Where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master, master
You promised only lies
Laughter, laughter
All I hear and see is laughter
Laughter, laughter
Laughing at my cries

FIX ME!
(solo)

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
Just a rhyme without a reason
Never-ending maze, drift on numbered days
Now your life is out of season

I will occupy
I will help you die
I will run through you
Now I rule you, too

Come crawling faster
Obey your master
Your life burns faster
Obey your master
Master

Master of puppets, I'm pulling your strings
Twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, 'cause I'll hear you scream
Master
