Xbox addict 'dies from blood clot'

The family of a budding computer programmer have on Saturday launched a campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of playing online computer games after their son died following a marathon session on his Xbox.

A post-mortem revealed that 20-year-old Chris Staniforth -- who was offered a place to study Game Design at Leicester University -- was killed by a pulmonary embolism, which can occur if someone sits in the same position for several hours.

Deep vein thrombosis normally affects passengers on long-haul flights, but medical experts fear youngsters who spend hours glued to their consoles might also be at risk and have urged them to take regular breaks.

Professor Brian Colvin -- an expert on blood-related conditions -- said it was "unhealthy" for youngsters to spend long periods in front of their consoles.

"There's anxiety about obesity and children not doing anything other than looking at computer screens," he told The Sun.

Staniforth's distraught father said his son would spend up to 12 hours playing on his Xbox.

They didnt really say how long he was sitting but mentioned he has played for 12 hours? I guess this means anyone who works at a desk for 8 hours a day should quit their jobs too.

There is no way he died from just several hours. He was either really sad and was playing it for like 10-20 hours, or this was something he did a lot.

I feel sorry for his family but you don't have to raise awareness, just do something else every so often, don't play your xbox every hour of every day.

This is probably sick because he is dead and i am sorry for saying it but he probably needed to get a life.

Legzman

what the fuck you lookin at?
I can't sit there for much more than an hour at a time. Even to watch a movie, my body get's all stiff and shit.

:nono:
He ONLY sat in the same place for too long because of video games!!

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Let me guess, the Columbine guys only killed people because they watched the Matrix too?

It's more about awarness to actually get up and do something else.

Nvm. This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Awareness to move? lol

If this kid was reading a book, this wouldn't be in the news. It's just another case of the media trying to vilify video games.

You would know if a blood clot was there anyway or about to be there. Your legs would get really sore(or where ever it was) and you would need to get up. I''m sure a blood clot is pretty painful, i wouldn't just play on.

You would have to be an idiot to stay sitting.

this -- ladies and gents -- is why it's imperative to : GET A LIFE .

There you go...X-Box goes on the list of dangerous narcotics.

PS....See you bastids and you blod clots later!!!

Yes it would but the headline would read - Bookworm 'dies from blood clot'.

Books are the devil!! Get off your lazy ass!! Quit reading!!! Get a life!!! Why read books about whatever when you can achieve those fantasies in real life!?!?!??!

Either way, you really need to get a life. It is fair enough getting a blood clot if you are either old or cannot move but he was 20. If he actually went outside and moved, this wouldnt happen. Plus how can you get addicted to a games console, it gets boring after a while so i don't know how he could play for over 10-15 hours.

How does one get this "life?" :bigear:

Xbox now has Kinect. Similar to WII as you put it, though it is actually Wii.

I like some of what I have seen on Wii. Mario Tennis...

Yes. The awareness movement to get up and move some. :D

People work too much as well. That should be done in moderation.
