X-Men:First Class

X-Men First Class is just good enough to keep the X-Men series from being the worst superhero movie franchise in history. Right now, it is still Fantastic Four, but it is nowhere near the best in this genre. The best in my mind are:

1: Batman (1989): Far and away the absolute best.

5: Superman

6: Batman Returns

7: Blade

8: Conan the Barbarian

9: Spiderman

10: The Dark Knight

It was awesome,in '89 when I was a kid.Now if you try to watch it,you realize just how cheesy it really is.

Dude, you gotta take into consideration the impact of the film at that time. Of course it's not gonna be as hot now, but examine the films as a whole for the time of their release, and the accuracy of the storyline. You just don't get that in recent superhero movies.

Consider this, if Batman was done in 2011, with Tim Burton directing and the advantages of modernized film technology (and those actors at their ages in 89'), it would totally and wholly revolutionize this genre... without question. Tim Burton's vision makes Dark Knight look like the uninspired garbage it really is. It's simple:

Tim Burton's Batman take you to the heart of Gotham City

The Dark Knight takes you to what is obviously Chicago.

That is the major difference between great film making and the shit most folks put up with. Details and accuracy. Everything is on cannon without the crazy CGI and other bullshit new movies so heavily rely on. Batman and Batman Returns re-opened the door for this genre. Recognize great work when you see it.

well, i know we've all been desensitized. you know whats fucked up is we all grew up watching looney tunes, right?

well i hadnt seen it in ever, and it was on after years of not seeing it. and i actually caught myself thinking, wow this is kinda violent, wtf.

the media has got us all fucked up in the head. they've been saying that shit for years and now, all the the sudden, i finally think it? i never, ever, ever, thought it before. the whole things fucked.

as for the first batman, thats how it was. comics, at least most back then, were witty and humorous, then serious at times with a story to work with. it was never meant to be a goth tale of seriousness and violence, it was supposed to be fun witty, yet serious enough to have a story. i think it had a great balance for what it was. comic movies (after batman 2) are constant disappointments if you ask me.

I'll give you the impact, but the accuracy?Really? Looks like you need to brush up on your Batman lore.

Actually,Burton's movies rather suck ass as of late,so as far as him having some sort of vision, well, let's just say that if he were making Batman today, you could bet your ass that Johnny Depp would be Bruce Wayne, and that just wouldn't work.

With the technology of today,he made the craptastic Planet Of The Apes,Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, and Alice In Wonderland.Yeah,I'm sure he would do better than Nolan.

Tim Burton's Batman take you to the heart of Gotham City

The Dark Knight takes you to what is obviously Chicago.

That's because like you,I live in Chicago as well,so not only did I watch some of the filming on Lower Wacker and on LaSalle,I'm sure that you would recognize where they filmed in the city too,but what about people that don't live in Chicago or have never been here? How do you think they feel about how Gotham was portrayed.

While Burton's Gotham does in fact feel like Gotham,it also feels fake and like it was shot on a sound stage,oh wait,it was.

Nolan's vision was for a real world feel, and he totally delivered.Personal preference, but I like it better.

That is the major difference between great film making and the shit most folks put up with. Details and accuracy. Everything is on cannon without the crazy CGI and other bullshit new movies so heavily rely on. Batman and Batman Returns re-opened the door for this genre. Recognize great work when you see it.

Again,I have no idea what you are talking about.Learn what "canon" is.For instance,Jack Napier never killed Bruce's parents,so how is that "details and accuracy"?Let's not forget about a Billy D. Williams as Harvey Dent,or how about the origin of Catwoman?

Like I said before,I can't even take you seriously anymore.

i, also, have been bummed with burtons stuff lately.

alice in wonderland was such a huge disappointment for me.

C'mon dude... Nolans was no more than an action version of Law And Order. Why do lose track of the fact that this is a superhero movie? Burton gets that. Its not supposed to have a real world feel, its partially fantasy. Batman was simply a mix of all the Batman versions over decades of material, which is a difficult task in its own right.

I find it funny that you nit-pick the Napier edit and the affirmative action Billy D casting, but support Nolans Clint Eastwood knockoff batman and nobody character portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, in that substanceless backdrop. There is nothing even remotely superhero-ish about Dark Knight. Btw, Morgan Freeman was not a much better AA cast than Williams was.

I'm gonna wait for "First Class" to come out on DVD as I'm not that excited by the new film. It fails to connect in any way with the first three films. I was told the other day that they hope to make a trilogy of films with the new X-Men cast.

Oh and I was sad to hear that they got rid of "X-Men Origins: Magneto" so they could make this one. The "Origins" series could have been quite successful.

Time to get talkin' about X-Men:First Class again...

Believe it or not, that's actually a good thing.

I saw the film last weekend.

I don't know the cannon at all. I don't care much, either. I'm not a comic book guy, but I enjoy quite a few movies that come from that genre.

This movie was largely enjoyable, but they made it too stupid. Every time the professor did anything with his mind he put his hand to his temple. Every time Magneto did something with metal, he waved his hands in front of him. That kind of stupid thing happened all over the place. Also, they had a big fricking world map with missiles on it, and they felt they had to point out where Cuba was.

Yes, everyone watching the movie is just shy of retarded. Thank you.

You know,I thought the exact same thing at one point.I can see where that could get annoying, but I didn't let it bother me that much.

The positive thing about First Class is that it is superhero-y. It does a decent job of taking you to a fantasy place, albeit at a specific time in history. The action is comic book like, and this is actually the best of the X-Men series.

That isn't saying a whole lot... but it is.

Honestly, the action was on-point, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND COUNTRY, give the fans some form of correctness in the First Class lineup!!! The boat was really missed on that, and that simple, simple idea would've really put this movie on my personal superhero movie list. Half the characters from X-Men put into this movie woulda been grand.

I also agree with lurkingdirk... it was a bit dumbed down. The Copperfield like hand gestures from Magneto and the magician psychic Professor X was a little much. Also, it wasn't '60's' enough for my liking, but whatever.

Now that is something we can agree on.

The only thing that I can think of why they used who they used was maybe because they didn't want to detract from the story revolving around Xavier,Magneto, and Sebastian Shaw. Now had they gone with the original line up and not gave proper attention to them, then there would've been an outcry amongst fans that they didn't do enough. So if that's why they did that, then I can forgive them due to the fact that the main story was still pretty damn good.

One thing that pissed me off though, was the total waste of Darwin, and I fucking hated Lenny Kravitz's daughter.Thought she was a complete wasted character with zero charisma.Other than that,Shaw's henchmen were just muscle with no personality but everyone else was adequate to good.

OMG... Angel Salvadore???

Who?

Why?

Darwin is such a freakin' awesome character, but is grossly misplaced and misrepresented. This movie desperately needed Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Iceman, with a proper Beast (pre-transformation) and Angel (Archangel). Old school 60's-ish unis to round it off, and you can keep everything else the same as far as I'm concerned. I would've have kept Xavier bald, but these seemingly simple edits woulda seriously made this a top 3 all-time superhero film. Easily.

It does make me wonder how many times they think they can redo a superhero movie as quickly as they do without sheer exhaustion or apathy setting in for the people that watch it.

What are they going to say, "We really really got it right this time. No fooling. So please come back after we screwed up making the same people the other five or six times this last decade and milking your money away from you because we know you sort of like the old characters from the comics"?

I think that the uniforms that they had were actually pretty good, and probably as close to the comic book look that you are actually going to get.

I don't think that this movie "desperately" needed the original line up,but it would've been nice to see how Mathew Vaughn would've done them.

The funny thing about it is that every time they decide to go against canon, they just further alienate a huge amount of fans. The logical thing that they should have done is to include the original team, with the same plot, that way everyone is happy.
