200 bucks isnt bad at all.. but the next-gen drive's implementation of copyright protection is utter BS. Blu-ray and HD drives *break* themselves if a pirated disc, wrong security key, etc.. is used.

I hope they both fail and a third, cheaper.. unrestricted technology emerges.

After all.. being first in a field almost never means success. Betamax paved the way for VHS, napster for P2P and MP3 sites, creative for iPod, and hopefully.. Blu-HD next. Pave the way for a better version, boys.

Hi Def DVD. It honestly wont do much for you unless you have a TV with HD capabilities. Which.. honestly, most households dont. Also, you'd need component or HDMI cables to truly recieve the HD signal into your TV. Possibly even proprietary cables from Microsoft. Altogether.. frickin' expensive.

Question that noone can answer: HD is still grainy as hell because filmmakers have their thumb up their ass and wont switch from chemical-film to digital yet..not to mention that HD cable and satellite still need to push for HD in the home.. and more than that, HDTV's!!!!

Around 16% of the population actually HAS a Hi Def TV.. and we're pushing for HDDVD and BluRay? I agree that DVD is effectively castrated by its own limits; but geez! This just isnt going to work when most people have sub-50$ DVD players and sub-40 inch TV's where the deinterlacing isnt the most obvious problem as in 50, 60 in. TV's.

DLP and LCD march forward.. plasma.. I never did care for it. Too many drawbacks. Heavy. Runs hot. Eats power, and the increasing number of dead-pixels per year.

Re: HD FILM

I don't get the film industry. My question was always, WHY cellulose film? They have the ability to film directly to a server and edit directly from there.

Then again, nothing in LA ever makes sense.
