this is great! i think it is terrific that you're interested, and i hope this guy isn't a dork-on. seriously, this stuff isn't so tough to do, if he makes it seem really complex, beat on him. you can take care of this stuff, save money, and feel better ownership of your vehicle.

As most of you probably know I work @ a shipyard and some of my co-workers are mechanics. One of them used to be a car mechanic for 17yrs before he became a boat mechanic and because cars cost a lot to keep on the road he's going to give me a course in basic car maintenance. He's going to teach me how to chance the oil+oil filter and other fluids a car uses, change the sparkplugs, brake pads and basically everything I can do myself to keep my car (and my girlfriends car) in good condition. It will save us a lot of money over the years and I will also know for sure we won't get ripped off
Good for you. I wish I would of taken auto shop in high school or college. It's a great thing to know and as you said it will save you a lot of money over the years.
This morning was my first lesson. My colleague who's teaching me gave me directions and I changed the oil+oil filter,the sparkplugs and the valve cover seal. The rest of the morning he gave me a very good explanation of how various parts of the car work. Next week I'm going to change the brake pads and disassemble the brake calipers, clean them and put them back together again and change the brake fluid. He's also going to show me how to clean the cooling channels in the engine by flushing them with water and he will also teach me how to change the distribution and V belt on another saturday morning. This stuff isn't as complicated as I thought. It's basically just undoing bolts and screws, taking things apart and putting them back together again (ofcourse it helps I want to learn this stuff).

Biggest problem with cars of today is everything is pretty tight under the hood,but they have designed them better as well so that most everything is pretty accessible.Having decent and right tools is a big help.
