Woman Kept Off American Airlines Plane For Offensive Shirt

An unidentified woman claims that she missed her American Airlines flight because staff found her choice of clothing offensive, according to the blog RH Reality Check.

That's because it bore the statement: "If I wanted the government in my womb, I'd f--k a senator." The slogan first appeared on a sign at a rally in Oklahoma in February. Oklahoma Sen. Judy McIntyre (D) famously posed with the sign, telling The Huffington Post, "I saw a sea of signs that caught my eye, but this one in particular -- I loved its offensive language, because it's just as offensive for Republicans of Oklahoma to do what they're doing as it relates to women's bodies. I don't apologize for it..."

...she says she was approached by a flight attendant who told her that she needed to speak with the captain before making her connecting flight because the shirt was "offensive." The captain informed her that she shouldn't have been allowed to board in the first place, and would need to change before boarding her connection.

It's stated in the airline's conditions of carriage, available on its website, that "American may refuse to transport you, or may remove you from your flight at any point, for one or several reasons." That includes if you "are clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offense to other passengers."

If even the woman herself acknowledges that the language on the shirt was offensive ("I loved its offensive language...") why would she wear it to the airport, commonly filled with families with small/young children, and expect that she wasn't going to catch any grief for it? I mean, I know why she would, but that's beside the point.

Imagine a kid 6 or 7, who's just starting to get good at reading, asking "Mommy, what does 'I would fuck a Senator' mean?" lol

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Because she's a wacko, attention whore, that wants the world to know her beliefs, because she thinks she's the only person that's correct in the world.

I will say this though, I do like the saying, and I agree with it, and it's ability to adapt to other issues

simple, I'd tell my son or daughter or both, or whichever child asked, "doesn't mean anything to you child, just an offensive language on her shirt. She's allowed to wear whatever she wants, it's just my job to teach you how to understand the situation."

So what if a kid asks what the shirt meant, tell them. Just do it intelligently.

It was meant as a statement, not a literal question, really. Just the thought of hearing a kid saying "I would fuck a Senator," made me chuckle.

oh..... well if my kid asked anyways, I'd tell him to ask the person next to him, just to see their expression :p

I am pro-choice, but you know what? Fuck her. People have to start realizing that if you're going to make choices, there may be negative repercussions.

Does she have the right to wear that shirt in public? Absolutely. Does the airline have the right to tell she can't wear it while travelling on their planes.

Absolutely.

With rights come responsibilities. People like her need to grow the fuck up.

I agree people lack common sense these days. Every place have their own dress code, you wouldn't wear boxer shorts inside a Casino!

Conspiracy...
Yes that was my first thought as well. No day goes by without someone saying the US will always defend the freedom of speech and how proud they are of it...

Anyway, couldn't they just tell her to put some other clothes over it like a jacket or another t-shirt?

I still believe it is anyone's right to wear whatever shirt they want. I don't care what it says.

I think you mean it is a person's right to wear clothing that says whatever they want it to say. You are absolutely right, that is correct.

Is it also the right of a business to refuse to serve a customer for any reason that doesn't involve racial or sexual discrimination. She wants to fly on this airline's planes? She has to dress according to their dress code, or according to how any employee of the airline deems. She doesn't like it? Go find an airline that doesn't have a problem with her wearing a work that says "Fuck" on it.

Too many people equate rights with absolute rights, and don't think others have rights too.

If I own a business, and I don't you coming in wearing a shirt that says "Fuck" on it, that's my right.

Politics aside... Look lady, go into the restroom and turn your fucking shirt inside out. Is it that important that everyone on the plane knows your position on abortion? Do you want to make your flight? Good, now go to the bathroom.

I bet you that the offensive word wasn't FUCK, but SENATOR attached to fuck. Now, that's discriminatory!

No, I mean right as in if what I am doing is not hurting anyone else. (Physically)

No one has the right to be protected from words.

That is not my argument. I agree with you. If an asshole wants to wear a shirt with a word on that 99% of people in our society thinks is inappropriate, they have that right. You want to make an asshole of yourself by offending everyone with your free speech rights? Sure, go ahead, be that asshole.

No, my argument is that if I own a business, I have a right to refuse you service for any reason I see fit (except racial/gender/disability). If I, as a business owner, don't like people that wear purple shirts, I can ban purple shirt-wearers from my business. I can ban anyone that wears jean shorts.

And I can ban anyone that wears a shirt that has the word "fuck" on it.

Maybe you disagree with that right, but it is my right.

She wants to wear her "fuck" shirt? Fine, go ahead, be that douchebag and force kids all over the airport to read your ridiculous "look at me, I am actively trying to offend you!" fucking shirt. But the airline doesn't have to accommodate you.
