Windows 7, to be or not to be

Taking to the XP users that have their computer and applications set up the way they want it for the past 3 or more years. Anyone making the hard choice, wiping everything for Windows 7? …

My desktop is running on XP and I have no reason to switch. My laptop that I just bought I made sure that it had Windows 7 installed on it because Vista sucks balls.

Probably depends on existing version of Windows (XP or Vista). And whether one is indeed upgrading or an absolute clean install. Some say the upgrade from XP to W7 is problematic.

i used XP til about a year ago, vista ultimate since then. 7 is essentially a service pack for vista, re-branded and overpriced. if you already have vista then don't bother with 7 (unless you can get it at a discount). if you have XP it gets a bit more complicated...

is XP faster on slow hardware? yes.
BUT... vista/7 is better on newer hardware. i recently bought a netbook that came with the crippled 7 starter edition (so castrated that it won't even let you change the desktop background), so i installed XP on it instead. after 1 year of using vista on my desktop it felt like stepping into a time machine.

vista is smoother somehow, more responsive if you have the RAM/CPU power, and looks a lot more modern.

then there are games, more and more of them support DX10 graphics, and DX10 only runs on vista/7.

so if you're a gamer and have a good machine you should consider the upgrade. get a friend's external hard drive to copy "files" (that means porn collection, right?) that you wanna keep and take the plunge. you won't regret it.

if, on the other hand, you have an older machine (and less than 2GB RAM), and your primary use is surfing the web/watching videos then save yourself the money and stay with XP.

I already have my porn and everything backed up. I just downloaded a working copy of windows 7 off of pirate bay. My computer is a 2007 gamming PC. It is at that point where I would like to spend $2000 building a 2009 gamming PC but I just can’t justify it yet.

Ya Fuck it this computer has 2GB of memory so it won’t take advantage of windows 7 anyway. Thanks Namreg

try "tinyvista", search on google. it fits on a CD, installs in 2.5GB, and runs perfectly fine on my netbook. no support for asian languages though, if you need that.

vista needs RAM because it does the opposite of XP: instead of keeping RAM as empty as possible, vista loads as many apps as possible into RAM, anticipating that you will use one of them. it learns over time which ones you use most often. with enough RAM, your programs will start up much faster than under XP.

gaming PCs do not cost 2k anymore. a good dual core CPU can be had for $150, 4GB RAM for around 100, and a decent graphics card (radeon 4850/4870) for about 120-150. AMD recently launched sub-$200 quad core CPUs. shop around a bit, newegg is a good place to do some browsing, and look at anandtech for performance tests.

I've got Vista home premium on my laptop and it's okay. I've heard that 7 is basically what vista should of been. So, I'm sticking with vista until 7 has been out for a while and all the bugs have been ironed out. It's not great, but I can live with it for now. Also, I'm not willing to pay out the ass for a new OS right now. Hopefully it will come down in price sooner than later.

win7 is what vista was to have been originally, but after long delays MS published an early version... that is what was sold as vista. but 7 is indeed what it was supposed to have been from the outset.

I'll 'switch' to W7 when I get to purchase my new laptop. Dear Santa...

:O

I just bought a new laptop not long ago and am waiting for my free W7 upgrade to arrive, but not sure if I'll install it as I have no probs with Vista. I don't know if it was really that bad when it was new or just got a lot of bad hype but it works fine for me.

Win 7 rocks that's all I have to say

it depends how it rocks if it causes problems like vista shit then don't consider that it rocks. I think about it like a beta testing OS. When I will find that 7 is enough reliable and proven I will install it.

I've been running 7 flawlessly since the first Beta on 4 machines. I had some BSOD's on one machine that turned out to be a PSU taking a shit on me. It has been many times better than XP ever wanted to be, and slightly better than Vista (which was smooth for me, too).

I like the new Mac commercial, think it sums up Windows 7 and Microsoft well:

Windows 7 won't have any of the problems Vista had
Vista won't have any of the problems XP had
XP won't have any of the problems ME had
ME won't have any of the problems 2000 had
2000 won't have any of the problems 98 had
98 won't have any of the problems 95 had...
etc., etc.

That really is a good commercial. I've never used a Mac, but the few Mac owners I've known over the years have all said they loved it. I may look into one when it's time to upgrade my laptop. Anyone else have a Mac? What are your thoughts?

^ here's my thought, screw MAC, the only reason they do not have problems is cause no one cares enough to make a virus to attack their OS. They are not worth the extra money IMO but I also have never used one. Also hate the fact that there are a lot of programs for gaming and such that you can not run on MAC's

macs have no software support, no hardware support, are massively overpriced, and the problems MS OSes have/had are exaggerated by their huge number of customers. it's easy to say all is well when you only have a 2 percent marketshare and your computer isn't compatible with anything.
