about damn time, i say. people with an obvious agenda should not be allowed to edit anything on wikipedia, as that amounts to little more than propaganda and free marketing.

Actually, from my experience as a Scientologist, it sounds to me more like the ones with the agenda are the people in charge of Wikipedia. True, Scientology tends to spam the shit out of people (my mom alone gets no less than 6 mailings from the post office every day, not to mention all the crap that comes into our inbox and spam folders), but people also tend to demonize Scientology for the mere reason that they don't understand it.

Yeah, because that 187 is hardcore (and everyone on the internet is a tough guy)!

I wrote in another post about how the Scientologists should load up in John Travolta's plane and go to the Middle East as missionaries, because you know how tolerant of other religions Muslim ruled countries are.

There's the exact reason they shouldn't have access to editing Wikipedia.

but people also tend to demonize Scientology for the mere reason that they don't understand it.

That, or the fact that Tom Cruise et al have done a wonderful job assuring Scientology has a terrible reputation.

Trust me, that's not the reason people demonize Scientology. Try reading up on a little site called xenu.net. You can spend hours or hours reading about everything that's wrong with the 'church', none of it is a misunderstanding. Taking a person's entire life savings and starving them to death in a cell is a crime, there is no confusion here.

I really don't know much about scientology, but I think the average person probably associates it with Tom Cruise jumping up and down on a couch :dunno:

He seems kinda nuts in his private life but he's still a great actor. Valkyrie was an awesome movie.

How exactly is this "ban" supposed to be enforced?

Any organization that recommends that you cut ties with anyone who doesn't agree with your beliefs (Scientology) qualifies itself as a cult in my opinion. Scientology is a cult and I don't know why we've allowed it to pass itself off as a religion for so long.

i was wondering that myself but assuming they somehow ban the church ip addresses or something, the church will just get their members to change it for them

They're going to ban all IPs registered to the church itself. It's not going to stop them from posting, but at least now they'll have to do it with their own IPs or that of some other person, which is what Wikipedia is after. That way, they can actually keep track of where information is coming from. It's a practice they've used for years.

There has to be something that pushes the borders on what rights are.

Right to bear arms - fully automatic assault rifles. When written, they were talking about your grandad's shotgun.

Freedom of religion - Scientology. When written, no one had ever became rich off of some wacked out idea about religion before they died (L. Ron Hubbard). Or wanted to, because under this same right, they still burned witches at the stake, and imagine how fast they'd be getting the rope while someone was trying to explain what Scientology was all about. The simple fact is anyone can register a religion, and has the right to worship whatever the hell they want. Myself, I don't believe in anything. (And I went to church twice a week growing up all the way up until I moved out on my own. Even went to a christian school!) I think when you die, you're dead....that's it. Karma and all that, it's bs. Shit happens, that's what that is.

If you guys think Scientology is fucked up, my girlfriend is native american. Now some of them believe some fucked up shit, like how a bear supposedly brought the sun up over the mountains, and gave us light, and how spiders did some shit. I feel like sitting down with these people and saying, "Let me get this right, you people believe that a bear brought the sun up over these mountains, and that's why we have the sun today?" You know, just to get some feedback on the matter. I can understand some though, i mean..these were pretty much cavemen before modern civilization got to them, so i can understand the primitive thinking, but to continue to believe this even today....damn.

Anyway, i'll stfu about religion. Where's the TnA!?

All religions are cults of sorts! Bejezus save me!

Well, I'd say if wikipedia doesn't want members of Scientology editing information it's their right to "ban" them from doing so.
It just makes you wonder, how far Scientology would be willing to go to distort facts or information, if the Taliban are still allowed to edit Wikipedia, but Scientology isn't. Question is, whether it's a matter of perception or whether Scienology really is that dangerous.

I'm glad I live in Germany. Because here you have to get government approval to be allowed to call yourself a "religion". Because only when you're officially declared a religion you get a certain legal status (special laws, tax money or government protection for example) and according to the Federal Court, Scientology is a sect.
So our media continues to beat the crap out of them every opportunity they get. :D
We have enough questionable rituals, codes, religions and sects. There's no need for one that is even more shady than most of the rest.

Good. If I was president of the world I'd put a bounty on scientologists to encourage people to hunt them down. Wankers the whole bunch.
