I know not a lot of you guys will be able to watch but Landon Donovan is gonna be on Center Stage with the Michael Kay on the YES Network (NY Yankees) on Friday at 11:00PM est.

My earliest memory is when I was 3, and we were at my brother's soccer game, and some shirtless kid around my age whipped a soccer ball at my nose as hard as he could. I can still remember the sinister stare he gave me before throwing it. Little psycho shit bag.
I'm not saying this had a direct effect on my feelings for the game, but I'm sure it didn't help. Shirtless 3 year olds still creep me out.

I don't think it's popular becuz we hated it and made a better version of football by jacking rugby rules and style of play :)

Americans like controlled, scientific sports. Hence why all the top sports in the US have deep stats and stat tracking. Soccer, rugby etc is too chaotic for Americans. We want specified times for the offense and defense to be playing. We want the ability to plan and practice plays that can be executed perfectly. Mass motion, chaotic soccer doesnt allow that.

We want our athletes to be larger then life. Thats why we love Shaq, 7'2" 320lbs and can run up and down an NBA court. . Soccer players are great athletes but would be overlooked in a crowd due to a body that doesnt stand out

We love sports highlights. In soccer the only highlights are missed or made goals. In the NFL each game has the potential to have loads of varying highlights

We love superstars who save the day . What can Ronaldo do thats close to hitting a game winning 3 as time expires or leading a team to a game winning TD in the last 2 minutes? Soccer superstars cant shine as often as superstars of American sports. We want a hero to cheer on and dominate games, but thats impossible to do in soccer on a regular basis

I agree with you on the stats thing.

Simply put, because it's boring. Americans want action and action means scoring. Watching a soccer game is like watching one of those old electronic football games where the board vibrates and the plastic players bounce around like a bunch of drunken rednecks.

To that end then, I don't understand why cricket isn't more popular in the States then. It's very much more controlled and statistic heavy. Plus, there's lots of scoring!

I'll be the first to admit that Americans can be weird. I'm an American and I can't stand NASCAR. Really, it's just a bunch of cars going in a circle. As for Cricket, it's a game named after a bug, and just ask any American to read this. Really, some of words/terminology used in this sound like something a three year old would say. And they dress like they are going out for a day of yachting, followed by a hockey game.

Ok, I understand now. Americans like their sports to be complex because they like to be entertained while the rest of the world wants their games to be so simple a monkey can do it cause they can't wrap their heads around a complex game like football. Gotcha.
