Why do pornstars "retire"?

Seems like a lot of porn girls only work for a couple years or less (sometimes even just 2 or 3 videos), and then they disappear and never do porn again. I even looked at some agency sites for fun one time and noticed that a good 20%+ were listed as "retired."

Why do these girls retire so fast? Is it usually because they failed a STD panel or something and got barred from the industry? or do they just get bored of it?

Maybe some go for the quick money then guilt takes over.

Some may be in the business for a while, then decide they want a family.

I'm sure there's a myriad of reasons why.

The myriad of reasons is correct. Some find Jesus. Some get found out by family and shamed out of the business. Some want to start a family. Some have a bad experience on a set and get turned off of the industry all together. Drugs & Alcohol problems. Some can't maintain a decent income because feature films are shot infrequently or they get turned down too much.

Pornstars are people, too. They got issues just like everyone else. The only difference is they are paid to have sex on film for everyone to watch. Society likes to stigmatize people who do that.

I don't mean to stigmatize them, just curious. So it's usually the girl who decides to quit, not the industry "kicking her out"? Like how Charlie Sheen was kicked off TV.

@wolverine wouldn't drug and alcohol problems make them want to do MORE videos so they can buy more drugs? Or do the porn companies not want to work with girls who do drugs?

The second one. Other performers too will often add someone to their "No List" if they turn up to set under the influence.

Yes, it's usually the girls quitting of their own choice, not their managers, directors, agencies, or photographers giving them the boot. Like the others have said, there are a ton of reasons, but the main reason is because most girls get into porn wanting to make a quick buck, then quit after getting their fill. And many girls who start out don't realize that it's not just as simple as getting naked and having sex on camera, there is a lot of work involved, and if you're not prepared for it, you're not going to last.

Pussies get sore after some time.

Ha, this is actually true. Shooting a bunch of scenes closely together can be really physically exhausting. I used to get bladder infections and overall just sore down there, and I still had to shoot. Plus it can put a lot of strain on the rest of your body with some of the positions you have to hold for extended periods of time. I distinctly remember my thighs being extremely sore from the way I had to shoot cowgirl. And now with my solo site, shooting a bunch of videos in the same day can dry me out down there, and having lots of orgasms in the same day can be a bit tiring. I enjoy shooting it though, so it's worth it :)

I can relate to that... Back in 2011 I shot a bulk batch of content (22 scenes in 4 days - pics AND video of each) and I lost all sensation in my clit for about a week afterward. I thought I broke it! LOL. Fortunately, everything returned to normal... it was just overstimulated toward the end. ;)

Wow, that's a lot in just 4 days. The most I've done is 30-some photo sets in 2 days, and a short video. Then one month I spent nearly every single day shooting anywhere from 2 to 8 videos per day. Completely exhausting, but once it's all shot, it's really nice to look back and say, "Wow, I got so much done!"

Maybe the specter of countless perverts with their pants around their ankles and unwashed fleshlights grosses them out to the point they decide enough is enough. Why did you put quotation marks around the word retire? Are you intimating they are retiring ironically?

Maybe he wanted to underline that "retire" here is just a synonym for "leave the industry" as opposed to the usual, literal definition of retire, since most pornstars don't keep going until they're put out to pasture, grey-haired, toothless and pissing into a tube.

Although some do.

Same reason as everyone else.

After awhile...You get tired of getting fucked.

Glad to read Andi's clit was only temporarily out of service. That is one hot clit/pussy combo.

That's exactly the reason why, especially of girls who get their start in Los Angeles/Porn Valley. These days all the studios want fresh faces, constantly. New faces are the only thing GUARANTEED to always make money for the porn companies.

New girls get lots of work for two or three months (many don't even last that long). As soon as you've shot once for each company, you're no longer new. In Southern California there are less than 20 studios shooting regularly. It does not take long to work for each of them once.

There are over 300 girls actively working in adult films and competing for a small amount of work here. If you're not brand new, you only get hired if you're really RELIABLE, attractive, a great performer, have a good attitude, and you're fun to work with. If you're not ALL of those things you won't work regularly and you'll "retire" very quickly and move on to other things.

That's why the mean average career of a new girl in porn is about 6 months. After that six month point is when it becomes much harder to keep earning income and getting shoots, and that's when the "wheat" (girls who are doing it because they love it, who aren't in it for quick cash) is separated from the "chaff" (girls who thought it would be easy money and they'd get rich doing porn). Still some of the chaff will stick around past that point, sometimes even for years. ...There are a small number of girls who keep working simply because they remain in demand, they're so ridiculously pretty or look like a barbie, but kind of hate their jobs. But other performers know who's in it for the money and who's not. Obviously it's a better job for us if we're working with scene partners who are doing porn because they like doing it.

Really cool insights, Siri, thanks for sharing! Sounds like there are some patterns that happen repeatedly for girls to leave the industry. I wonder...is what happens to them afterwards something of a pattern too? Or is it all over the place?

I always felt this way about Crissy Moran, as an example. She was in demand because of her looks but didn't really dig the whole thing. People still talk about her. She does the Christian thing now, which is perfectly fine by me. But she just never seemed to like doing the fuck on film stuff. She always seemed more comfortable as a nude model. Either way, some girls transition out as "adult models" from the porn thing after their time comes and goes. Others now go on to work on cam sites because it pulls in enough money. Running your own website, too, has become a cottage industry niche in the porn biz. Some are haves but most are have nots.
