I think it was the Italian mafia that organized it and carried it out with the approval and protection from the CIA or something bigger.

Simple. The Warren Commission was set up to appease those who would be taken in by all of the holes in the Oswald conviction. The Zapruder tape made the goals of the WC much more difficult. A cover-up had to be bolstered by a scapegoat theory using "respected" but friendly figureheads. Remember: no matter who was at fault, the assassination was necessary to plug all of the gaps created by the Bay Of Pigs, Bobby Kennedy's assault on the mob, JFK's trysts, LBJ's connections to overseas oil and military industry, Kennedy Sr.'s connection with organized crime, and America's foreign policy interests in southeast Asia and the Pacific rim. Oswald was created and manipulated many years before 1963.

The evidence of a CIA-Mafia connection is overwhelming. After the Bay of Pigs fiasco, JFK made the statement that he would "smash the CIA into a thousand pieces". At the same time, his attorney general ******* Bobby was spearheading an effort to expose the mafia and its involvement with organized labor, specifically the teamsters union and its president, Jimmy Hoffa. There were also extreme right-wing factions in the US corporate world who would stand to benefit from a hit on the president in addition to the indignation of Cuban premier Fidel Castro at the attempted coup that was, at least from Castro's perspective, led by JFK. All of these factors came together in a sort of "perfect storm" that ultimately culminated in the conspiracy and eventual assassination of the president on November 23, 1963. Governmental involvement in the conspiracy was evident in the subsequent botched autopsy of Kennedy, the mishandling of the ongoing investigation and the ensuing whitewash that was the Warren Commission report.
Who ****** president Kennedy? Well, Lee Harvey Oswald certainly was one of the hit men (a CIA operative without question) but he was also brilliantly set up to take the fall. He unwittingly played the patsy to perfection. The Zapruder film shows beyond question that the fatal **** shot to the head came from the front of the motorcade. Therefore, If there is more than one shooter, you have a proof of a conspiracy. It will likely remain an unsolved mystery into perpetuity since most of the people who were either directly or indirectly involved in the actual assassination somehow are conveniently no longer alive....some of them who died under very suspicious circumstances.
I urge anyone with a significant interest in this subject to read Robert Groden's book. It is very enlightening and it is very well researched.
I subscribe to the conspiracy theory myself lol.
