Darkie is simply a distinction, like my younger brother is a darky, which by comparison to my light-skinned sister, he is, and she's the one who called him that.
Now that I think about your statement, it seems there's a fine line between being and accusing, because for you to assess that as a racial comment, you'd almost have to be looking for it. People who actively look are about as bad as those they're accusing.
