Hmm, here's an honest response from a European...as most participants in this discussion strike me to be Americans...
Here, nobody...and I mean n o b o d y except some golfers gives a crap about Tiger Woods. To me, he's just another guy that cheated on his wife. It's a private matter and nobody elses business. Of course it's wrong and he will have to "pay" for it. Let his wife tear him apart. But I don't know the background and the whole story behind this. And I don't care. Why should I be upset about it? And where does his marriage reflect on his professional life? I don't get it.
Henry on the other hand cheated (or even "conned") an entire football nation, the Irish. And brought shame once again on his entire football nation, France. Not that some countries don't already have more of a (stereotypical) reputation to be cheaters, guys like Henry make it even worse by "attending" to those stereotypes (or by activating them... or serving them... eeh, you know what I mean). Because of his blatant, intentional and heavy rule-breaking, Ireland won't go to the World Cup, whereas France, will even though they really haven't earned it and don't deserve it this time.
How some Americans can still say "he did nothing wrong" and stuff like that, I don't get. But I'd guess that's the problem. I often get the impression, that the only time that cheating is considered wrong in the US, is when someone is cheating on his wife/husband. Everything else is fair game as long as one doesn't get caught. And even if one gets caught, one either weasels himself out of the situation, lies and cheats some more, pretends it never happened or even shamelessly states, that it's someone elses fault for not catching him while cheating. Hardly anyone shows any shame, remorse or respect. But don't you ever cheat on your wife. You'll get crucified, burned at the stake, you'll be impoverished, pauperized, ruined and cast out, you'll sink to the moral level of the guy who flew the first plain into the World Trade Center. You'll be registered in the adultery database and your face will show up on every dating watchlist under the category "cheating bastard" or "lowlife scum" right next to rapists and childmolesters. When you move into a new neighborhood your neighbors will be warned via mail that there's an "adulterer" amongst their midst. Female waiters will refuse to serve you. Your insurance will be revoked because your lifestyle is too risky (who ****** around has stds!!!). You'll have a hard time getting a new job, because noone will trust you, because adulterers are like junkies...lying scum!!!
...wait.... I'm getting off topic... where was I?
Ah yeah, Henry is the bigger cheat. In my experience, who cheats in his private life like Tiger Woods did doesn't necessarily cheat everywhere else too. People who cheat the way Henry did (the act itself as well as the context) are often very likely to cheat in every other aspect of life as well. Ergo...
