Who is the best forward [SOCCER] ?

I disagree with b23k that there isn't a one great forward in the world right now. Jesus christ, Thierry Henry is the dogs bollocks. He is amazing. I would pay 100 quid to watch that guy play. In my opinion there is no better striker in the world than Henry at this moment in time, his all round game is just superb.

BTW, i'm not an Arsenal fan.

Thats fair point, but Henry does not ALWAYS show up, how many times has he gone missing in the Champions league for Arsenal in the past couple of years when they have REALLY needed him?

I'm sure you will point to his hatrick in Rome last year, and his performance at Inter this season......but for everyone of those there are 2/3 average/poor games that i don't think befits someone to be acclaimed the best striker.

At the World Cup, his biggest contribution was to be sent off, again when France needed him bad, after Zidane was out thru injury etc etc

I think if you live in England, all you hear about is Henry, Henry and thats fair enough...but in other countries, the talk is of different players also, and you have to respect that and not let sky sports, and twats like Richard keys brainwash people.

Not that i'm saying you are brainwashed, but for some people hype is more important than substance.

yes i respect ur opinion mate don't worry there i think henry is a great player, but the point i was trying to make is as a out and out goalscorer there is no better than van nistelrooy his record speaks for it's self, but van nist does'nt only score from the box just look at his maradonna esc goal against fulham last season.

The Lurker

lurker the points you made about Henry going missing are spot on, and i have just posted to that effect also.

I agree with you that VN is a better goalscorer. Sutty, remember Henry was often a wing man in his days at Monaco and early period with France. He was very inconsistent, and that is why Juve got rid so quick.

Wenger has done a great job in developing him as a central figure, but Henry goes wide often out of instinct as that was always his role......now he has perfected it and is damn right scary much of the time.

i'd disagree with lurker about VN being able to score from outside the box much, he is purely a penalty box striker (nothing wrong with that, its his job and he is world class at it)

The fact you can only cite that one fulham goal is an example of that, its the only time i remember him scoring from outside the box in england, or internationally.

In conclusion, i'd always take a great goalscorer, over a scorer of great goals.

ruddy has been shit this year.....hence the fact saha was bought (not just because they havent got a leg to stand on in terms of a first team 2nd forward)

i think man u are closely challenged this season...arsenal are yet to loose a game....and man u were beaten by feckin wolves....i used to think that when you watch a man u game you are garenteed a win but your not anymore....their denfence is sloppy and if it wasnt for the major talents of Tim Howard man u would be trailing this year

Arsenal i can watch any of there games and just know they arent gonna loose easilly....and 80% of the time they will win easilly...

now when chelsea come to mind...there feckin team is daft...hell yeh they got world class super players (argubly) but they dont play enough together as a team so how are they ever gonna rely on teamwork approach

btw has everybody heard the new rumours that henry is now considering going to real madrid?.....he be bloody loony if he did....ok yeh real madrid might be the best team in the wrold..but supaliga sux...there is hardly any challenge what so ever for Real, mainly cause of there whole advantage that they are funded by the goverment......i think the best place and most respected place you can play in the whole world...is right here in the premiership

then again thats just my opinion

acording to stats....here are the top strikers this year so far in the prem

1) Henry - Goals = 16, Assists = 5, SOT = 55, SC = 22
2) Saha - Goals = 14, Assists = 5, SOT = 36, SC = 0
3) Anelka - Goals = 11, Assists = 3, SOT = 38, SC = 15
4) RVN - Goals = 15, Assists = 1, SOT = 32, SC = 3
5) Shearer- Goals = 16, Assists = 2, SOT = 30, SC = 4

there are other stats that total up im just going by the genral score and what strikers get most points for

SOT = shot on target
SC = Sucssesfull cross

These are the yahoo fantasy football points they have scored due to the things they have done on the pitch
1 Henry = 388
2 Saha = 286
3 Anelka = 274
4 RVN = 256
5 Shearer = 254

other stuff they get points are as follows:
Match winning goals
Pens
Set Piece goal
winning a foul
winning a corner
and they loose points for ball giveways, cards etc etc

We will have to disagree again, La Liga is a better watch than Premiership from a technical standpoint. Maybe because I am from Argentina that i take this view, but the premiership is piss poor filled with incredible mediocrity.

I was talking to some mates earlier that maybe the league cup final this season, is the worst ever on paper....Bolton - Midd'boro FFS! Who the hell (neutral i mean) can be enticed by that! Bolton are crap bar Okocha's skills, and Midd'boro are dreadful going forward, absolutely clueless.

Take away Man.Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea.......the rest of the division may as well be div 1. Liverpool are unwatchable under Houllier, Newcastle are perennial losers.

Its wrong to say there is no challenge in spain, when in England Man.Utd dominate big time, how many times have Arsenal won under Wenger (twice?), have they ever retained? no. England is a 2 league team, with Chelsea now in contention cos of Abramovich.

Its the same all over the world, there are always 2-4 teams better than everyone else, and thats the way it should be, you wouldn't want football to be like NFL (which i like also btw) where parity rules and the whole league is mediocre.

In England its ManU, Arsenal and maybe Chelsea.
in soctland, its celtic and Rangers.
In Spain, its Valencia, Real, Depor and if they can sort their lives out Barca.
In italy, its Juve, Milan and Roma...and if they sort their lives out Inter, and occasionally lazio.
in Argentina, its Boca and River, and sometimes Independiente, San Lorenzo or Racing.
In Germany its Bayern or Dortmund.
In Holland, its PSV, Ajax, or at times Feyenoord.

Its the same all over, Real are NOT the best team. They just have some big names, they did not win CL last season, and they won't this season. They will struggle to get past Bayern, and they would be crushed again by Juve (who are the best team in europe)

Real have an excellent 1st XI, past that, they have fuck all, their squad is dreadful.

I don't think Henry will go to Real, Owen will end up there, and Ronaldo will return to Inter.

come on Silicone, we're not in the USA! Where Stats mean everything, who cares about 'successful crosses'...that would be relevant for a wide man, but not a striker. I'm interested in goal tally for a striker, above all else. Saha has done well this season, but he is a flash in the pan, like Ricketts was at Bolton.

I believe that Ronaldo will not come back to Inter... They just bring back Adriano to Milano and he is doing a good job. And to the club that intends to took Ronie from Real will spent a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Darkman, I see your point, but the Ronaldo to Inter story has legs to it big time. He has made no secret he wants to play for Inter again, remember the reason he left was because of Cuper (what a surprise, an Argentine and Brasilian not getting on!:) )

There may even be a case that Vieri will end up at Real, and Ronaldo back to Inter. Vieri is almost definetly leaving Inter.

Inter are a stupid club, who never know what they are doing, they once had mutu...they let him go, they had pirlo,....they let him go, they had adriano......they let him go and now have to pay big bucks to get him back.

They are stupid, i feel so sorry for my man Javier "Pupi" Zanetti who has been loyal to Inter all these years, and has seen the team underachieve around him....he could have gone to Real years ago, but he stayed loyal and has had to watch all this crap going on around him.

i swer to christ i could kill some of you guys...i started a threa up about folks joining a fantasy football team that you would of all loved to pieces and i got jackie shyte!...btw like the american thing.....all i was trying to show was tho the difference between the players.....saha had it hard at fulham he only had mallers behind him and possibly boa morte that were any good....now he's at united...i think he's gonna rocket...hope he does anyway

Alan Shearer in his heyday was better player than Van Nistelrooy is now. Now, that is what I call a goal machine. He could score from anywhere, 6 yards or 30 yards. Bloody hell, I'm talking in past tense, he's still doing it now. It's just a shame he went to Newcastle from Blackburn, he should've gone abroad, he would've been a huge success.

The best player in the world is Francesco Totti. So that'out :).

1 Totti
2 Crespo
3 Tevez
4 Di Vaio
5 Kaka

I am sorry I hate Brasilians aswell since I am italian but Kaka is very strong. I do agree that Cavenaghi is strong also but he's not in Europe yet so we can't really value his skills. Salas and Angel were great aswell in South America but they both sucked in Europe.

Forza Boca

Do not hate Brazilian players (they are good and give brightness to every championship played around the world)... You can hate the team "Brazil" 'cause we defeated Italy in USA' 94... ;)

Henry is.

There's a difference between a forward and a striker.

An example of a forward is Henry. He creates and finishes, almost a 'playmaker' type player.

A striker is Ruud van Nistelrooy, who just finishes. While he's on of the best finishers in the game, he can't do the stuff than an Henry or Scholes can, make plays.

I like your choices, although you rate Di Vaio very highly which surprises me! He is a good player, but top4 in the world?

Who do you support in Italy? Obviously my team is Boca, but i have always had a liking for Napoli since Diego went there, it is such a sad story to see what has happened to them, and the constant problems they have off the pitch.

What you say in relation to South America - Europe, is why of my biggest bug bearers! Cavenaghi is an outstanding young striker, who will dominate in Europe just like he is doing in Argentina. Quality is quality, and even though I am Boca, I am not going to disparage the incredible River development system which has produced countless World Class players on a conveyer belt.

I don't think Salas sucks, just that he has had problems with injury and his weight, he is back at River now and is always injured.

Angel was just a product of what was around him at River, he is a decent striker.........but when you put a decent striker in front of Aimar, Saviola and Ortega.......suddenly he looks better than he is!

I get you, but at the same time i disagree. For me a 'playmaker' is a no 10, a Totti, a Del Piero, a Aimar. Henry is not a 10, he makes goals as well as scores them.....but he is not a traditional no 10.

I agree about your comparison between RVN and Henry.

But not with Scholes, Scholes is a goalscoring midfielder....but not a playmaker, he does not have the skills of a playmaker, he has the skills of a good finisher, not creator.

scholes is to much glory in my opinion

the own goal against argentina comes to mind....the look on scholes face when own didnt pass

when did Scholes score an own goal against us?

I remember in 98, he cocked up a piss easy chance against us when we were 2-1 down, had it gone 3-1 i think we would have been done. Then we came back with that glorious set piece that Zanetti rifled home, left foot. That was a special game, i have it on tape.......obviously i would have erased it by now had we not won the penalties!
