Who are they?

Can anybody name either of these two people, without cheating.

Why is it that the person on the left is more famous than the one on the right?
Why does having a big ass make you a household name, while saving over a billion people gets your death mentioned at the end of the news?

It's not Kevorkian, Mayhem was right it's Norman Borlaug.

I'll try to answer your last question. Society does not place great value on education, science, medicine or anything that deals with mental acumen. There was a time were people such as Charles Drew, Jonas Salk and others were placed in high regard. In the past several years, how much coverage was done for the Nobel prizes besides Peace? When was the last time you heard who won The National Spelling Bee? We as a society would rather watch or hear about someone who is dysfunctional & say "at least I'm not that bad!" that watch someone doing well and saying "I can be better!".
This not to say the athletes and those in the enterainment field weren't also in high regard but there seemed to be a balance.

It's called advertising. Get the name out there and it will be recognized. Get enough people and money together and you can become famous for doing nothing. Don't let me make a list of those from the past that did this. Too, too many.

While I generally agree with this, please allow me to turn the last portion of your statement around. Can you name someone currently that is famous for doing something (similar to the names that I mentioned)?

During the mid-20th century, Borlaug led the introduction of these high-yielding varieties combined with modern agricultural production techniques to Mexico, Pakistan, and India. As a result, Mexico became a net exporter of wheat by 1963. Between 1965 and 1970, wheat yields nearly doubled in Pakistan and India, greatly improving the food security in those nations.[4] These collective increases in yield have been labeled the Green Revolution, and Borlaug is often credited with saving over a billion people worldwide from starvation.[5] He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 in recognition of his contributions to world peace through increasing food supply.

Later in his life, he helped apply these methods of increasing food production to Asia and Africa.

I think some rep is due for getting this right while you hayseeds were getting it all wrong. :hatsoff: :thefinger:

(Luckily, this came up on "The West Wing", and the hint was in the OP, otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue.):D

^^^^
I was under the impression the person in question died recently.

The one on the right could have been more famous had he had a sex tape and his own reality show.

Tim Tebow.
