As for Terry keeping the armband, I fail to see what taking the captaincy of hiim will achieve if he is still in the squad. On ability Terry will be in the English squad so surely if he remains in the squad then he should stay captain.

It's more of a symbolic gesture - you make your emotional leader the captain because he can rally the troops. The captain is a big deal in UK for most people. The captain is supposed to be the spiritual leader on the pitch, leading by example. If things are not going right he has to fire team mates up. Sort of like a manager on the pitch. The go between for players and coaching staff.


Also in rugby the only player allowed to speak to the ref is the captain.
