What was high school like for you?

High school was great, football, track, and powerlifting,of course there was partiesand girls, hell the best years of my life other than that it was all good:thumbsup:

One long round of anxiety, paranoia, humiliation, boredem, restlessness, fear and misery.

School fucked with my head. Complete waste of time. 12 years of absolute shite that got me nowhere and helped me spiral into a pit of despair which reached it's pinnacle in my early 20's.

How do you think your life would be without a formally recognize education? Better or worse? Well, suppose I know what you'll say butcan you describe what you would see as better?

I used to absolutley love pre-school, I used to beg my mother to take me back there whenever I was home. Couldn't get enough. Then on the first day of proper school I cried all day non stop. Strange, because the first year of school is no different to pre school really, so what was it about it that I hated so much? It never got any better, I just fucking hated the place. I've come to think now that subconciously I was aware that this place I was about to spend the next 12 years of was a hellhole, I just wasn't aware of it yet.
Sounds like you did (maybe still do) have some psychological problem with change and no ability to adapt to it. The non clinical term for that description is "spoiled brat".
As far as I am concerned school is nothing but a motherfucking prison. It's a child's first introduction to conformity- do this, do it that way, in this amount of time and if you don't, there is consequences. THEY FUCKING THREATEN CHILDREN. WTF
So you want a world where there is no conformity..and the conformity you may be willing to accept..you don't expect there to be consequences for non conforming behavior?
You are told from day one what is important, not asked. Nobody asks you what you want, if you are happy doing this activity it's all about ramming somebody else's idea of what constitutes right living down your throat. You get bullied, yelled at by teachers, taught a bunch of completely irrelevent shit that will get you nowhere and then when you start skipping class (which is completely logical thing to do when you consider the mental and physical abuse a student can be subjected to) they have the nerve to tell you that YOU are the one doing a bad thing.
Well, yeah..you are a fucking kid!! Teachers should listen to a child's version of what's important?
The whole experience is just a complete mind fuck for a young person. It doesn't prepare people for life at all, it just prepares them to be a cog in the wheel of the economy (because most important thing in the world is a job!)

Fuck that shit.

School scares people into submission and subsequently produces young people with a fear based view of the world, saps their creativity and beats the happyness out of them.

Centuries of educational and societal evolution are at odds with your conclusion.

Any situation can be a hell of your own making. There are people who earn millions of dollars a year entertaining people through sport or art and live in hells of their choosing. Hint though if you're in a situation, you look around and most everyone else is having fun in that situation but you...guess where the problem most likely rests.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Pretty much a constant stream of drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll. Going to class was obligatory and only served as an official way for the establishment to interfere with partying. This was in the early '70s....height of the Vietnam war era and hippiedom and there I was right in the middle of it all. Great times.

It was alright. The first 2 years sucked ass. The last ones were pretty good though. I went to a school for the arts. So we were a bunch of instrument playing stoners, artist, dancers and singers. No really sports teams to speak of. Though they tried to have a football team one year and we actually won one game in the season.

High School was good for me. I wasnt that outgoing so I stayed away from any trouble. I was a big nerd though I was captain of the golf team all four years I was there and i got MVP honors all four years for golf. I did also recieve the best overall gpa in health class when I was a sophmore.

It's not really that hard to understand at all. Many children don't want to learn whats on offer. If they don't it doesn't make them idiots, they're probably just bored because more often than not the classes are fucking boring and irrelevant.

Children aren't asked if they want to go to school, they're required. That's why it's such a big failure of an institution. Just a bunch of grown-ups poisoning young minds with the idea that their worth has to be earned through good school grades (compliance). What a horrible place.

School can't increase somebody's intelligence, it's can't increase their memory capacity and it can't increase their attention span. So what use is it? It just deals with the external world. School serves only two purposes that I can think of-

1)to provide a supervised facility for children whose parents are too scared to let their children off the leash and let them be themselves. The parent's have generally a very fear based view of young people, void of any trust and mostly made up of negative stereotype- if young people aren't be watched over by an adult they'll be out breaking into cars and robbing old ladies, taking drugs etc so school is the best place for them, even if they aren't really learning anything or enjoying it

2)create more worker bots and shop bots- it is absolutly essential for our economic system that we have an endless supply of people who have had the imagination, enthusiasim and intelligence beaten of them- these people tend to consume more as an antidote to their wretched existence, ensuring the continued growth of our economies.

one of the most profound thoughts I've read today, this week for that matter. you sir have just earned a blog post on shimmys bookmarks congrats :) and i'll be happy to give you a free membership to NDNgirls if u email me.

sounds like you have a nauseating respect for authority

So you want a world where there is no conformity..and the conformity you may be willing to accept..you don't expect there to be consequences for non conforming behavior?

should do we things simply on the basis of whether or not we are told by somebody to do them/not to do them?

we need better reasons
Well, yeah..you are a fucking kid!! Teachers should listen to a child's version of what's important?

god forbid we let children think for themselves...

Centuries of educational and societal evolution are at odds with your conclusion.

an epidemic of depression in the west (the most educated part of the world), coupled with excessive lifestyles and unfettered consumption runs counter to the idea that we're better off for regular schooling

we're getting the wrong kind of education

what would you suggest an 8 year old child do to remedy this?

start reading Freud?

You insult the people who would die to have an education emceeemcee. What you're doing now is equivalent to spitting and pissing on the graves and lives of all those who've never achieved anything simply due to the fact that they never had any possibilities of going to school so that they could become someone.

if people genuinly want to go to school that's their choice, and thats great for them

choice being the operative word here, at present there is none

People say that ignorance is bliss, what they don't say is that that particular "bliss" doesn't last long...ignorance is hell!

I agree, ignorance is hell. Especially when the education system can't free you from it, yet are arrogant enough to believe they hold all the answers a person could ever need in life.

Without knowledge a person cannot evolve, you use the computer that you're using now because someone spent countless hours reading books and attending lectures from other knowledgeable people.

And a number of those people, usually the most brilliant, learnt on their own accord without having to suffer through the schooling system.

People that spend their time complaining about school without recognizing how good it is to them are often the ones who end up becoming the "worker bots and shop bots" that you spoke off, and you're well on your way to becoming just another one of them.

no chance :)
