Okay, I'm going to try playing devil's advocate. Isn't it reasonable to think that the question is "what purpose does a social security number serve" and not "tell me your social security number." I'm willing to believe that the OP just worded it in not-the-best fashion.


Assuming that's the case, my answer is: a social security number is nine digit identification number used by the US Government to track individual citizens for taxation purposes.
