What is the worst officiated professional sport in your opinion?

For me it's by far one sport in particular in which the officiating is so dreadful it's an absolute joke... barely watchable.
And even though I love the game itself, I see it as mostly bogus and illegit. It's a true love-hate relationship.

I'll wait to reveal my pick a little later in the thread, after a few responses.

NBA for me too... love the players' skill level, but HATE the officiating.

I have DVR capability which allows me to go back and review each and every blown whistle. It's astonishing how poorly officiated the game truly is.

Based on my observations, It's clear that NBA referees' calls are correct only about half of the time. And if you factor in missed calls (e.g. traveling), their overall assessment is dismal.
What makes matters worse is that the NBA doesn't even recognize there's an integrity problem with its game.

What I hate most about the NBA:

Phantom fouls, where there's virtually or in some cases absolutely no contact whatsoever. This is a common occurrence, often happening multiple times per game.
Ticky-tack (hand-touch) fouls, unnecessary stoppages, ridiculous given the general physicality of the game.

But I believe there's a psychological component behind the excessive whistle blowing.

The NBA uses 3 refs. Up until the 1988-89 season, the NBA had always used just 2.
This, in my opinion, is when the officiating actually began to deteriorate.

Here's why:
Officials have a psychological need to exercise their authority.
With 2 referees, there was always plenty of opportunity for each ref to exert his or her authority.
Now with 3, it sets up a sort of "competition" among the officials to blow their whistle.
Each of them desperately wants to "participate", be involved in, and exert their authority on the game.
In some cases, I'm absolutely convinced refs make calls because they haven't blown their whistle in a while.
Subconsciously, they may feel obligated to blow their whistle, even if the call doesn't exist for fear of being perceived as not doing their job.

Coaches, players, and fans should be up in arms!
Unfortunately, coaches and players are deterred from publicly complaining as they are subject to stiff fines imposed by the league. This leaves it up to the fans to demand change.

Possible remedies to restore game integrity:

Use ex-NBA players as referees
Return to 2-ref officiating team
Institute a replay assessment system similar to NFL's red flag to review critical or consequential calls
No more ticky-tack fouls that serves only to unnecessarily impede the flow of the game
No more fouls where contact is initiated/created by the offensive player
The NFL has a rules committee whose function it is to annually assess the integrity of their game. The NBA needs to form its own rules committee, ASAP!

Don't watch or care about Baseball, Basketball or Soccer so can't comment on them. I think in recent years NFL with replay and rule review is very good. What people may not know is on Monday every official is graded on every call they make. NHL is pretty good too but like NFL if a player is fouled and retaliates it's the retaliation that usually gets penalized. I'd like to see improvements on that.

Now I would say it's NASCAR although I know comparing auto racing to any other pro sport is impractical. There's just sooo much more to monitor. Every vehicle is quarter million $ and up hand made machines built in a culture of "If you aren't cheating you aren't trying hard enough!" The storys of cheating scandals are legendary and driver feuds are promoted not discouraged. Now they have been trying to improve in the last few years but they aren't at the level of Formula One, Indycar, or sportscars.

Baseball

Strike calls are very subjective - what 1 ump calls a strike the next one might not

And the thing that pisses me of the most is: Baseball has the fattest and most out of shape umps of any sport. It is embarrassing to see Joe West waddle around trying to make calls when he is about 100 pounds overweight. Officials in every sport other have to pass a fitness test of they don't officiate. Dick Bavetta officiated NBA games in his 70s. But he had to pass the same fitness test as officials in their 20s. The next time the MLB umps contract comes up for renewal MLB needs to put a fitness test in there. If your body fat and/or weight is above a certain threshold you can't ump until it is in acceptable levels and if you can't do that within 1 season - YOU ARE FIRED! Get in shape or get lost but I am fed up with seeing beached whales umpiring MLB

I am also tired of seeing incompetent ones stay around, too. How many times do we see someone like Phil Cuzzi, CB Bucknor, Angel Hernandez and more fuck up call after call yet stay employed. Supreme Court justices are the only ones who should have a job for life - not MLB umps

The secret ingredient? MY BALLS
The worst OFFICIATED professional sport?

NBA, hands down. The NFL has a lot of missed calls, but those calls are often genuinely missed. The NBA just has shitty refs who allow players to get away with blatant bullshit *coughlebronconstantlytravelsandtheyknowitcough*

Are we counting judging as a form of "officiating". If so then I would have to put boxing or figure skating at the top. I don't know if any major sport has been more corrupt as far the actual action of the sport itself and things closely related to it than boxing in it's history. If you count the sport as an industry as a whole maybe the IOC or FIFA would be on top.
