What is the latest good film you watched ?

Between the Folds (2008)

Interesting documentary about the artistry and mathematical applications behind origami.

The Road

I passed on Book of Eli and decided to watch this instead. Man, what a great movie. I never read the novel, or any of Cormac McCarthy's work, so I went into this thinking it was going to be Lone Wolf and Cub meets Thunder Dome, but it was nothing like that.

Who knows what it would really be like after some apocalyptic event, but this portrayal is as accurate as any I could think of. The story and acting is really superb. Vigo and that Aussie kid did a great job and I was a bit surprised to see, in The Making Of, that Eli* was played by Robert Duval.

I highly recommend this to anybody.

*Neither post-apocalyptic Elis have any literary/movie relation.

Lady Vengeance

I think this is my second favorite, behind Oldboy, in Chan-Wook Park's Vengeance Trilogy. The first hour is a bit disjointed...full of a lot of dreamlike imagery that's kind of hard to explain. It's not quite crystal' clear and not very linear, but still comprehendible if you allow yourself to think a little. It's well done and carefully planned out, but I can see some people being turned off with the liberties Park takes in expressing his story.

The last 45 minutes takes a completely unexpected turn, as did Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and is much more traditionally filmed...even seeming a bit draggy at a few points. There's still a few things that I don't quite fully understand, but those things are not so crucial and will probably be resolved by a second viewing.

For those who've seen it, I thought that key chain scene was really impressive. So much was explained and implied with absolutely no dialog or character interaction. Park can certainly never be criticized for his excessive exposition.

Masters of Horror: Don Coscarelli: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road

I checked this out because it was only 51 minutes and directed by Don Coscarelli of Phantasm fame. Also, the only other MoH I've checked out was Miike's Imprintant that that god awful John Carpenter/abortion one....wait, and maybe the one with Misty Mundae and bugs...or something.

Anyway, this was complete and total shit. Some chick's car breaks down on a mountain road *gasp* and she gets stalked by a big retarded backwoods stalker. Only the twist is that she has all this survivalist knowledge that she gained from an ex-husband so she possibly turns the tide. I won't spoil it and give away the "twist" ending, but this was just bad in every way. Stupid antagonist, annoying characters, bad acting and really generic video cinematography.

It's a real shame because episodic horror is such a potentially fun thing and I'd really love to see some good MoH content. I'm almost starting to miss Tales from the Crypt.

Kick-Ass
