What do you consider when voting in elections?

This will no doubt be a fun thread.

When you vote in an election, what all do you take into account when determining who you will vote for? Do you judge candidates/parties solely on political reasons (how well they support your political ideals) or do you also take into account how well you think a candidate/party will uphold other things, such as values? I know there are some pretty big fractures in American politics between supporters of the Democrats and the Republicans and I recently read an article that stated a lot of votes in recent elections have been decided by Americans judging values to be important to them (say, for example, Bush's reelection in 2004) and others where it has not played much of a factor due to other reasons (such as the economy taking more presidence in 2008).
