What Are Your Favorite Video Game Genres?

Military simmish shooters
Sports
Light-hearted flight games (pilot wings, Starfox)
Epic RPGs
Post apocalyptic action
And Spiderman. Yes, that game is so damn good, it's a genre unto itself.

RPGs
Tuned based strategy
Both 4x and Grand Strategy strategy games.
Old school RTS (think Warcraft, Starcraft, or Mechcommander) Sadly, this genre is almost dead in today's video game environment.
GTA like open world games
City building games or similar games where you can creatively create parks or farms or whatever.
Realistic or at least Semi-realistic physics simulation games like Kerbal Space Program or the old flight simulator games.

Games genres I don't like as much.
Fighting games (It's not so much I don't like them as much as unless you want to devote a huge portion of your life getting awesome at one it just isn't worth it. Being a casual Street Fighter or Tekken player, for example, just isn't fun as you will only get your ass handed to you by the serious players.
Platformers
Shooters unless they are like Doom, are part of a great setting like Borderlands, or have realistic shooting physics.
Sports games
MMOs

I'm finding I'm moving around from game to game & thus genre to genre. If I finish one game, I sometimes feel like playing something totally different so I don't burnout. Like finishing an Assassin's Creed game, moving to a CoD, then a puzzle, etc.

I think a big factor is how important multiplayer is, and whether you need to "Git Gud" to enjoy the meta. Because I move around from game to game, I don't have the time or patience to become excessively proficient to hang with the big boys online. I might play to get the easier online trophies, and then move on.
I also hate game that require a subscription or microtransactions, so by both accounts MMO's are out for me.

Turn based RPGs, though I haven't seen one with that old school magic in fuck knows.
Open world exploring type things, Breath of the Wild, Witcher 3, etc.
Fighting sorta. Kinda.

I should also mention that fighting games are good when you can play with a small group of people and everybody sucks about equally. Like if you had a bunch of friends and family members over for the day it's great fun taking turns having the loser pass the controller around and beating the crap out of each other. It's simple to jump in and mash buttons for some casual fun for those that don't really want to get into a Wii Sports type of thing for a group of people.

Open world driving/racing (Test Drive series TDU & TDU2, Forza Horizon series, The Crew game series, etc) GTA also because it has cars obviously, I usually like open world games with cars.
Sim racing (Forza Motorsport series, Gran Turismo series, Project CARS series, Assetto Corsa series)
Flight sim games (Microsoft FS2002, FS2004, FSX, X-Plane 10, X-Plane 11, Aerofly FS 2, etc)
Combat flight games (Tom Clancy's HAWX series, Ace Combat series)

Cinematic space operas like Mass Effect and .... well nothing much else. It's surprising how under-represented this genre is, despite the success of the trilogy. Also, GTA and Fifa #boringiknow

I love simple arcade 2d shooters

We need some proper space RPGs. I discovered Mass Effect Andromeda looking for that genre. I liked it OK.

No he hasn't.

No, I never heard of the series until someone recommended Mass Effect. I had assumed the one on PS4 (Andromeda) was the only one until I finished it and everyone informed me that one sucked and the other ones were better. I thought it was OK.

Actually, I didn't think Mass Effect: Andromeda was all that bad once I got used to not playing as Shepard, and I still have it in my PS4 collection. Mass Effect 1-3 are a lot better, especially the first one. I was hoping EA/Bioware was going to remaster the trilogy so that I could have them all on my PS4, but no dice.

You thought it was ok because you don't know any better.

First one is fun. But I had a hard time honestly starting up a 2nd playthrough with a diff Shepard due to planet exploration. The 2nd in my opinion is the best out of all 3. The planet exploration is better but still tedious and I was under the assumption materials would go over into 3. Which brings me to 3. High entertaining but a few tweaks kinda bug me but overall solid game.

Go Mr Adam! Go forth and get them 3 and correct your life.

I prefer the first one because of the planet exploration and I wanted them to expand on it. I liked that you could go to the planets and find the materials you were looking for, only to run into a Thresher Maw or something. It was more Star Trek like. I also liked the elevators.

Yeah. I did it every planet in first one because was fun. Second time I was looking at it like a chore. All 3 are fantastic. I'm jealous Adam will have virgin eyes going through it first time. Now I wanna play 2nd one again.

The Thresher Maws were definitely fun. Sad they were pretty forgotten about after minus that one memorable scene I won't say to not ruin it for Adam.
