EDIT:sorry didn't see you're question...where i'm at (kenai peninsula) its been relatively warm, consistent 40's, snows all melting, mud everywhere etc, every bit of spring...we actually had a really mild winter, which i found kinda ironic considering a lot of other state's winters

Well, it wasn't actually a complement per se.
If you quit something, it should be for good.
Also, I didn't like Twain's critical reviews of Edgar Allan Poe.

I hear ya......but you have to think that Twain and Poe are opposite ends of the spectrum........it stands to reason that Twain may have been thrown by Poe's writing....hell, people STILL are.....
And it is a compliment to an aspiring writer to have someone throw out a comparison, even if it is the ONLY similarity!

Still, Twain shouldn't have been as critical as he was.
