Want to cry ?

I don’t know maybe I’m just cynical. I always find these shows to be far more of an exercise in exploitation than any so called “help” or “support” the show and the host claim to provide. Oprah is going to get a nice spike in viewership out of this and she’ll be made to look like even more of a saint than she already is made out to be, because she might cry and she’ll speak in that hushed voice that makes her (and every other host of shows of this kind) sound kind and warm. Maybe she is, what do I know? But I’m always struck with the fact that shows like this are very similar to the freak shows of old, except that they have (or are made out to have) an air of respectability because they’re on "TV".

I feel sorry for this woman, it was a terrible incident to have to go through I’m sure. But as I say these shows aren’t really about the victim. It’s for us as an audience to stare and fulfil some morbid curiosity we all have with accidents and disfigurements of this kind. It’s also for Oprah to reap the rewards of airing it.

I've always looked at these shows as a sort of P.T. Barnum's freak show or something like that. Not trying to be funny or mean with that comment but it seems that is all shows like these do it. Just like when Maury does the "I'm a sex crazed teen!" shows, just so young girls can parade around in slutty outfits and pervs can tune in and enjoy

Couldn't have said it better myself.
