Vids don't work...related to version of WMP?

Got a new comp awhile back that uses vista and Windows Media Player 11. When I try to click on vids it gives me the 'internet explorer cannot display webpage' message. On the old comp I would click a vid link and it would simply open WMP. Ideas on how to fix? My thanks ahead of time.

Could it be anything aside from codecs? I got ffdshow and I think something else I downloaded awhile back. Also, it happens every time without fail. I would figure that simple chance would yield one that would work now and again. The problem also only happens when I try to open online stuff, even audio only links that say 'windows media'

not using firefox. If norton or windows defender were blocking WMP from accessing the internet when I click a link, it would give me some sort of message saying WMP was trying to right?

Very much appreciate the help, been having the problem for awhile and I can't figure it out.

Need to give more info I think...

I can watch a movie clip that I download, but that same clip would not work if I just click on the link.

Vids like youtube vids work.

Norton isn't interfering.

Did you somehow disassociate wmv files with WMP? I know one of those codec packs has association options upon install, you could have accidentally set the wrong thing so now IE doesn't know what to do with them.

Another possibility (and more likely) is your security settings. Vista by default is setup to be more secure, and you need to play with things a bit to get them working again. Check your IE options.

Similar problem. Bought a laptop for my parents with vista & wmp 11. When i click on links you can hear the sound but the picture doesn't appear. Various forums keep giving me codecs to download but i didn't spend £450 to download codecs for wmp so the machine is going back to be fixed.

click on All Programs, then Default Programs,
click on Set Your Default Programs,
Click on Windows Media Player'
then Set This Program As Default
This should work

thanks for that i am having a problem with mine also

You should download one of those codec packs instead, that sound but no video problem IS related to not having the correct codec available on Vista. Those packs fix the problem. Sending it back wont get it fixed, unless they simply install one of those packs, then charge you for it.

They also have the added bonus of being able to play quicktime and realmedia files, without having to install those god awful programs themselves.

Thanks, i'll give it a go.
