velentine's day...

Already done 2 months ago ...

I spent about 3 months hitting different ruby importers, looking for a loose ruby. I finally found one, had a colleague set it, and it turned out great -- almost 3 carats of a natural stone (with defects of course, but not noticeable without magnification) for under $1K. I've yet to buy anything for my wife for more than a couple hundred dollars, and this was the first "big" anything. Yes, more than her engagement+wedding band together.

Heck, I think throughout our 15 years together, I've bought her -- in total -- less than what most people spending on just an engagement ring. Every time we go looking at diamond rings, she's like, never buy me one, I will take it back, I'm not kidding, no matter how much I try to convince her otherwise. I mean, I was supposed to buy her a diamond at 10 years, especially since got basically "two days salary" equivalent when we got engaged in college.

I gave her the ruby this past weekend, since I'm away during the week. It took some coercion to get her to accept it and not want to return it, including proving I didn't spend a dollar over $800. She's been showing it off at work. They call us poor normally, and my wife couldn't help but tell them how much it actually cost. She's just too thrifty. Even her one friend who used to work retail jewelry sales was like, "damn, you only paid what?!"
