Use of slur 'retarded' spills over into Texas governor's race

If you're not a NeoCon, fear the wrath of Palin when she plays the retard card

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's public criticism of White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel's use of the word retarded has spilled over into the Texas governor's race.

Palin made national news this week when she posted a note on Facebook calling for Emanuel to be replaced after he called colleagues in a closed-door meeting "retarded."

"Rahm's slur on all God's children with cognitive and developmental disabilities -- and the people who love them -- is unacceptable, and it's heartbreaking," Palin wrote.

Gov. Rick Perry's campaign confirmed Thursday that one of its consultants, David Carney, repeatedly used the same word in a conference call with KERA/Channel 13 before one of last month's Republican gubernatorial debates. The episode was reported soon after it happened by The Come and Take It Blog, an anonymous blog focused on the race.

Carney was White House political director under President George H.W. Bush and was an aide on Bob Dole's presidential campaign.

The story gained attention this week when U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison's campaign brought it up ahead of Palin's scheduled campaign appearance with Perry at a Houston-area rally Sunday.

CNN reported Thursday morning that Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton said it was unclear whether the incident with Carney actually happened.

"While it seems few can comment on the veracity of the conversation, Gov. Palin believes crude and demeaning name calling at the expense of others is disrespectful," Stapleton told CNN in an e-mail.

Later in the day, Perry campaign spokesman Mark Miner acknowledged that the incident occurred.

"It was an unfortunate choice of words, and the Governor is extremely disappointed," Miner said in an e-mail.

Also Thursday, rock musician and conservative political activist Ted Nugent, who will perform at the rally, became part of the story.

Politico reported that Nugent, speaking about hunting to Royal Flush magazine in December, said: "It's perfect. It's untouchable on all levels. Unless you're retarded."

A request for comment from Palin's representatives was not answered Thursday.

The outrage from groups representing mentally disabled people over Emanuel's comment has brought attention to a campaign to abolish the word from everyday speech. Special Olympics runs r-word.org, a Web site devoted to ending the use of the word.

In a joint statement this week, advocates including Special Olympics Chairman Timothy Shriver and American Association of People With Disabilities CEO Andrew Imparato said: "Our community has earned the right to be respected instead of ridiculed. We have suffered injustice for generations and we are demanding that it end."

I have to say that she is totally miss-stepping on this whole issue. Either you have a problem with people using the word, or you don't. This whole defend one guy (Limbaugh) but attack another (Emmanual) thing she's doing is, well... retarded. I've never been a Palin hater (how could I hate a woman who's ass I dream about pounding?) but I lose respect for her more and more every time she pops up. I love that Nugent is in the mix now, though. I'm sure he'd like to nail her ass, too! :D

The whole mess is stupid, and she should stay out of it.

BTW, I love the retarded neocon bimbo tag. The neocon part is dumb and detracts from its humor, but the "retarded bimbo" part is golden. :D

Sarah is coming to Houston on Sunday to support Rick Perry? That's the best news I've heard in weeks!!! And how hypocritical of her! Wasn't she the keynote speaker at the big, bad tea party convention a few days ago? If so, why isn't she supporting Debra Medina? She's the tea party's choice:

Oh....and Ted Nugent? Stay out of Texas politics, OK? Isn't there a beaver or a muskrat somewhere up there in Michigan that's waiting for you to shoot him with a bow and arrow instead?

damn, just how old are politicians? sounds like a bunch of two year olds

but the thing that really got my attention, there's a website devoted to banning the word "retard"? and retard is now referred to as the r-word? now thats news to me.

Conspiracy...
If a Democrat was accusing a Republican of this you would be on their side, Hellraiser.

It's freedom of speech, but a paid servant of the people should watch what they say. :hatsoff:

Exactly, this entire story is so completely pathetic.

Someone using the word 'retarded' is what accounts for political talking points these days? Of course it is that shouldn't be surprising at all, because an actual discussion about the issues that are important to the country do not score cheap political points or headlines/ratings like a good cat fight does. At least this way those looking to take advantage of the gullible fools who are willing to get behind such a non-story for political gain can allow for "sides" to be created and the whole "national divide" line can be brought out of whatever closet it was put in last time and played up once again.

I think the Republicans and Tea Baggers are nothing more than people who live to create a soundbyte that the Media can pick up and cycle through for 1 week and pound the soundbyte into our skulls.

Everytime a Dem does something, a Republican and a Tea Bagger has a soundbyte prepared to condemn the action, no matter what it is.

Public Conservatives are no longer about communicating ideas, merely communicating in soundbytes, creating a controversy off of a soundbyte and ramming it all over FixedNoise 24 hrs a day.

Sarah Palin is either too dumb to know what hypocrisy means or only knows that it doesn't matter with the thickly-skulled cavepeople which constitute her voting base...

I dont know whats more annoying, politicians who enforce political correctness or the politicans who grovel and go on the apology tour. No one has the balls to take a stand. You may as well keep your mouth shut instead of acting like a big shot if you're just going to end up bowing down to the "pardoners" like Al Sharpton or the Special Olympics committee. It's definitely a double standard to only call for the replacement Rahm Emmanuel, though im not against the idea of getting rid of him simply because he's doing a shitty job.

You are WAY off base on this one. If anyone is the king of all that BS, it's the lefties. Who were the geniuses who came up with the whole concept of being "politically correct"? Since this ridiculous dogma has come into being, nobody dares do or say anything for fear of offending someone. That's on the LEFT.

I've said it time and time again. There is nothing in the Constitution that grants you the right to be free from ever being offended. If someone says something you don't like, DEAL WITH IT! Live and let live.

This is not directed at you Titsrock. It is directed at everyone who has become so hypersensitive these days.

As a conservative, I will be the first to admit Sarah Palin is wrong on this. She needs to spend her time dealing with real issues. If Sarah, or anyone else, doesn't like the word, don't use it. Just don't whine when someone else uses it. We have free speech in this country. At least we used to, before the PC'ers were unleashed during the Clinton era.

The problem with trying to replace a word like "retarded" with another word or phrase is that, eventually, the new word or phrase will offend the same group, and we will have gotten nowhere.
