U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air quits

Re: U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air q

Are white Americans the only group of people who use words (labels) to degrade people who are different from them? :dunno:

There's more out there than the N-word. I'm waiting for Faux News and the Tea Baggers to begin using the Mexican slurs in public discourse.

Petra made an interesting point about words having power over us. But, how do we stop/limit that power? My answer: Equality in Education. Hmmm. We don't seem to have that in our education system do we? :dunno:

Education would influence the power of a word? No, the individual determines the power and significance of a word.

yep...context is what matters...a title like that clearly makes it sound like some sort of racist rant, when it is clearly not.

that ugly, jew, bitch, bagged out, horrible, crazy, rotting bag of bitch,, flake, hideous, poor dumb bitch, mean, egotistical, bullying, bitch!
Cunt!

how dare she use the "N word", doesn't she know its not right to call people names?
( even though she didn't even do that)

After calling her a "dumb bitch" and a "flake", I was informed that two of my sponsors were no longer going to support my posts here. Waldo's Used Car Parts and Ming Li's Massage Parlor & Nail Salon both informed FreeOnes that they were cutting off the checks as off today. :(

I feel that this is a violation of my 1st Amendment rights. And I now have no choice but to quit (eating artichokes).

The way I see it, one dumbass down... about fifty to go. Nancy Grace and the cast of Jersey Shore are next! :violent:

Its ridiculous that any one word can have this much significance and or this many rules as to when or by whom it can be used. This is another case of the few manipulating the masses.

I know many of us (if not most) have been desensitized to porn in general just from viewing 5k+ posts and the wonder of high speed internet. Sure we still run across unpleasant things but we hit the back button 2,3 times and on we go with our day.

I look forward to the day when we become desensitized to words and are able to shrug them off. When as a collective people we can say "enough of the bullshit, GFY and whats for lunch" all in one breath. :horse:

I love how people are pretending that this is a First Amendment issue when it's nothing of the sort.

Yeah, you're right. Her 1st Amendment rights weren't violated in anyway. The Government didn't keep her from speaking her mind and she wasn't fired from her job for saying what she said. She chose not to renew her contract because of the backlash she got and then threw the 1st Amendment out there.

Then of course Sarah Palin had to join in and tweet for her to fight for her rights. Isn't this the same woman who got upset with Rahm Emanuel for calling someone else a "retard"?

Yeah, the same woman who imposed a windfall profits tax on oil companies in Alaska and then distributed that money to "the people". Yet she runs around like a headless chicken calling other people socialists (or as she probably spells it "soshilist"). The twit who tweets.

Uh oh, I've insulted the Queen of the Wingnuts again. I bet I lose another sponsor or two for doing that. Say goodbye to Cleetus' Carwash & Auto Detailing. Damn! :ban2:

Re: U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air q

This is my take on this whole ordeal.

Dr. Laura was wrong. Flat out wrong. Dr. Laura didn't even address the woman's issue. If my white in laws are constantly saying the N word around me and are asking me to speak for how black people feel on something constantly wouldn't you be offended or insulted? My biggest issue is that Dr. Laura said that if you don't have a sense of humor about race then don't date outside your race. So basically what Dr. Laura is saying every time you hear someone say the N word towards you you should have a sense of humor about it.Because that is what the caller's problem was. That doesn't come remotely close to making any sense. Look..it simple. Its easy to tell someone else of a different race to have a sense of humor about race when you are not on the receiving end of it.

This is exactly why I have always felt that 99% of people who cry about racism are the ones who truly have a problem with skin color.

Dr. Laura even made it a point to say, live on the air, "Don't take things out of context"...and that's exactly what has happened. She's right and nobody on the face of the earth can argue against that.

Also, the black lady even proved the point that Dr. Laura was making - that white people 'aren't allowed' to say the word '******', but black people are - when she said "I know what the 'n word' means, and I know that a white person said it". This black lady doesn't have a problem with hearing the word '******' - she has a problem with the hearing word '******' when it's said by a white person. Ironically - that's racism.
Main Entry: rac·ism
Pronunciation: \ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm also -ˌshi-\
Function: noun
Date: 1933

1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

If black people can get away with saying the word '******' in a non-derogatory manner, then so should white people. Or Asian people. Or Mexican people. Or Indian people. It doesn't matter.

As much as I hate the double standard, we all know that there is no way in hell that black people are NOT going to get enraged by a bunch of non-blacks dropping n-bombs all over the place. Especially not white people. Blacks not using the word themselves is far more likely to happen than a bunch of suburban white folks going around dropping n-bombs around black folks and there not be some type of violent incident. Not all black people react violently to the n word being dropped, but enough do that people usually tread cautiously.

That's true except in most cases those other than black are likely using it in a racist or otherwise insensitive context.

Again, just because some woman doesn't mind experiencing a simulated rape in a consensual circumstance doesn't mean rape is not big deal to women then.

Re: U.S. talk show host who used the 'N' word 11 times to a black caller on the air q

Why do so many people assume all black people use the N word? I've met so many black people throughout my life and I've never heard any of them once use the N-word, just because a few dumb rappers or street gangsters use it doesn't mean it's socially acceptable for all black people to use it amongst themselves, most of the black people I know would be embarassed or even angry if they heard another black person use it. That's just a UK perpective.

Where did you read that? Howard Stern has an exclusive contract with Sirius Satellite and he actually defended what she said on Monday's show.
I'm pretty sure he was referring to something that happened when Howard still worked for CBS/Viacom. Apparently.Dr. Laura was offered a gig with the same company that Howard worked for at the time, and she was going to take the job under one condition: That the bosses would "muzzle Howard" in regards to her. In other words, she told them to restrict Howard's freedom of speech by ensuring that he didn't talk about (criticize) her.

Thankfully, they refused....and she turned down the job.

Pot....meet kettle.

Howard did defend her last Monday, but he also recounted that incident.

Not all black people react violently to the n word being dropped, but enough do that people usually tread cautiously.

People tread cautiously because people are too fragile.

There's a HUUUUUGE difference between saying the word '******' as I am, just as part of an intelligent conversation, and using it as a derogatory remark as in "Get away from my daughter, you ******!!!"

People who can't see that are getting mad because they're idiots and can't see that they're really getting offended by their own stupidity and fragility.

That's true except in most cases those other than black are likely using it in a racist or otherwise insensitive context.

That's true.

But why should NOBODY of white skin color be allowed to say the word '******', even if it's clearly not being used in a derogatory sense? Then, on the other hand, why is every single black person allowed to use the word freely, in both derogatory and non-derogatory ways?

And, if people (not you personally, just people in general) are going to talk about how 'insensitive' it is to use the word '******', even if it's said in a derogatory manner or not, then why can every single black person on the planet get away with saying 'cracker' and 'honky'? Call me crazy, but aren't those terms insensitive as well?

It's the people who fail to see the double standard with their so-called claims of racism who are the true problem - not the words themselves.

I guess the question is this: Why would white people want to use the word anyway?

I guess the question is this: Why would white people want to use the word anyway?

The reasons are obvious. First of all, it has become a taboo. When certain people feel that they "cannot" do or say something, they feel compelled to. Especially if they feel that they can "get away" with it.

I, personally, do not say, "the n-word". If the word comes up in a conversation (such as this) I will not treat the word as it is some passage from the Necronomicon that will usher in some curse or jinni. We treat the word as if merely saying it, in any context, has been forbidden in some superstitious way.

If we're talking about Eminem saying "faggot" or some man saying "cunt" you will no see me referring to those terms as "the f-word" or "the C-word". That shit's childish and is deteriorates our responsibility to understand and project context.

As far as all this talk about "How come whites can't" and "how come blacks can", that's a matter or both common sense and reality. The common sense is either there or it isn't. But the reality is that anybody can say anything. There's no law that makes it a crime. Even the FCC does not regulate or censor racial slurs or even hate speech. Anybody can say anything they'd like without any legal reprehension.

Well, actually there are limits to free speech. There are things that are illegal to say.
