U.S. scientists create beating hearts in lab

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. researchers say they have coaxed hearts from dead rats to beat again in the laboratory and said the discovery may one day lead to customized organ transplants for people.


"The hope would be we could generate an organ that matched your body," said Doris Taylor of the University of Minnesota Center for Cardiovascular Repair.

Her study, which appeared on Sunday in the journal Nature Medicine, offers a way to fulfill the promise of using stem cells -- the body's master cells -- to grow tailor-made organs for transplant.

Fascinating!

Again it comes back to stem cells which I find very interesting. As many of us do I'm sure, I cautiously am hoping for even more dramatic breakthroughs from the use of stem cells.

Yet another reason for me to vote Democratic. IMO there needs to be no red tape holding up stem cell research.:dunno:

i would think this is a great step foreward in not only research but a race to development of organs for replacement candidates . some people have no real hope of living long enough to find a donor but might be able to make it to regenration or generation of a suitable lab produced organ. i really think all the hubbub about the "morality" of stem cell work is nonsense.
