two accounts needed? help!

so, sometimes ... when I log in from the front page I can be active on the forums and after a short time I get logged off and when I attempt to log back in while in the forums my account isn't valid?

do I have to always log in from the home page? is this common? I should be able to go to the forums page and log in there, right?

actually ... I can only log in on the home page. I cannot log in on the boards page. why is this?
