Twinkies Maker May Close Today

I'm so horny, even the crack of dawn isn't safe
Just a clear case of angry fed up people lashing out the only way they had. Their leadership in the bakery unions was poor at best but believe me when I say this lies squarely on the backs of the multiple management teams that have been brought in the last decade to leech off the carcass left behind by the completely incompetently run Interstate Brands Corporation who ignored market trends, allowed competitors free range, and looked at innovation as a waste of money.

Such a RIGHT ON! post :goodpost:

Hostess had it made for a very long time. Tastykake was their only competition for a long time till Little Debbie came in and undercut their pricing. They never took advantage of the emerging healthy snack market. While Wonderbread had it's day, private labels started cutting into their business and the company had no response. It wasn't till just a few years ago that they decided to enter into the multi-grain bread market. It was too late The market that had already been established and now had known brands. They missed the boat too many times in the way of growth, marketing, and creativity. This collapse didn't happen overnight. It took decades of piss poor management to bring them into the current situation. If the unions would agree to the pay cuts, I still don't see any growth down the road and the company would be asking for more pay cuts in the next contract.

Yes and no. While it was ultimately a disagreement with a union that made the company decide to close down, it was a very unreasonable stance by the bakers' union. In fact, it was so unreasonable that the very Teamsters didn't support it. Those guys were basically looking out for themselves without looking out for their source of employment. Usually union representatives will urge their members to be reasonable with their requests. In this case they totally killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.

This untrue. The unions bent over backwards twice to help the yahoos that ran this company. In my mind it needed to die. I was a Teamster for these aholes for 17years and watch one new CEO after another manipulate a the numbers to qualify for a bonus only to really leave the company in the same boat. From my end the pay had gone down to the point where it wasn't really worth it to get split days off, work 60+ hours a week, pay for most of my healthcare with no pension whatsoever and oh yes start my job at 3am everyday. These brand will be purchased by people that know what they are doing and it will thrive.

Hostess CEO Received 300% Raise Before Bankruptcy

There's also talk about a failed fifty million dollar investment that failed.

Not only did the CEO give himself a 300% pay raise right before they went into bankruptcy he also gave all his fellow executives a 70% pay raise as well???? Then tried to play it off as a standard procedure. This is of course while they are yelling that they are broke and the unions are bleeding them. It comes down to a terribly run company for years, a terrible choice of hires for the first bankruptcy, and really nobody with a direction in leadership. 3 billion dollars in sales and you can't turn a profit?? I cannot speak for the bakers unions but we in sales were the lowest paid people in our field by quite a large margin so how we were 'bleeding' them I have no idea.

Well, you would know the situation better than I. The only knowledge of it I have is what I've seen in the news recently, and we all know how accurate and unbiased the news is...

Yep, you can thank the unions for that

I never ate a Twinkie in my life (and it's probably candy that's typical for the USA). And I don't know the story that led to the end of the company either, so it's just a remark I'm making here. Isn't blaming the unions a little too easy? Usualy strikes and such is something that happens at the end of the story when the problems of a company are already full in progress, not at the beginning.

They will rise from the ashes. Although I am now unemployed......

I didn't catch that you worked there, Zeeblofowl. I hope things work out for you. One bit of good news that just came across the news feed was that the Federal bankruptcy judge has ordered the baker's union and management to enter a private, closed door session to try to mediate the issues. The judge will preside over the mediation. For now at least, the Chapter 7 liquidation plan has been postponed. According to Bloomberg Financial, they have until Wednesday morning to reach an agreement.
