Trump's Excessive Travel Depletes Secret Service Budget

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
To use a pivot tactic that is all-to-frequently employed by those on the right to divert attention to the Trumpster fire that is currently ablaze in the White House, if this were Obama those same people would be screaming bloody murder over this. As it is, I'm sure they will offer a compelling rebuttal as always.

WASHINGTON — The Secret Service can no longer pay hundreds of agents it needs to carry out an expanded protective mission – in large part due to the sheer size of President Trump's family and efforts necessary to secure their multiple residences up and down the East Coast.

Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles, in an interview with USA TODAY, said more than 1,000 agents have already hit the federally mandated caps for salary and overtime allowances that were meant to last the entire year.

The agency has faced a crushing workload since the height of the contentious election season, and it has not relented in the first seven months of the administration. Agents must protect Trump – who has traveled almost every weekend to his properties in Florida, New Jersey and Virginia – and his adult children whose business trips and vacations have taken them across the country and overseas.

"The president has a large family, and our responsibility is required in law,'' Alles said. "I can't change that. I have no flexibility.''

Alles said the service is grappling with an unprecedented number of White House protectees. Under Trump, 42 people have protection, a number that includes 18 members of his family. That's up from 31 during the Obama administration.

Overwork and constant travel have also been driving a recent exodus from the Secret Service ranks, yet without congressional intervention to provide additional funding, Alles will not even be able to pay agents for the work they have already done.

The compensation crunch is so serious that the director has begun discussions with key lawmakers to raise the combined salary and overtime cap for agents, from $160,000 per year to $187,000 for at least the duration of Trump's first term.

But even if such a proposal was approved, about 130 veteran agents would not be fully compensated for hundreds of hours already amassed, according to the agency.

"I don't see this changing in the near term,'' Alles said.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers expressed deep concern for the continuing stress on the agency, first thrust into turmoil five years ago with disclosures about sexual misconduct by agents in Colombia and subsequent White House security breaches.

A special investigative panel formed after a particularly egregious 2014 White House breach also found that that agents and uniform officers worked "an unsustainable number of hours,'' which also contributed to troubling attrition rates.

While about 800 agents and uniformed officers were hired during the past year as part of an ongoing recruiting blitz to bolster the ranks, attrition limited the agency's net staffing gain to 300, according to agency records. And last year, Congress had to approve a one-time fix to ensure that 1,400 agents would be compensated for thousands of hours of overtime earned above compensation limits. Last year's compensation shortfall was first disclosed by USA TODAY.

"It is clear that the Secret Service's demands will continue to be higher than ever throughout the Trump administration,'' said Jennifer Werner, a spokesperson for Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings.

I sincerely doubt the Secret Service has a harder time protecting the Trumps than they did the Kennedy family. And even if money was an issue (which I also doubt) they'd find a way to get by. I'd be willing to bet someone loyal to the Stompy Foot regime or Stompy himself had a hand in fucking with their budget.

Last week the cock chuggers in the media were all about promoting the notion that there are heroes in a terrorist group (Antifa). This week its focus is on some bullshit about the Secret Service being broke and the Trumps treating the Secret Service like servants (which I also doubt).

The Trumps cannot possibly treat the Secret Service any worse than Hilldebeast and her spawn.

I imagine the truth lays somewhere in the middle.

yeah, no shit. According to firsthand accounts, Hillary treated her secret service detail like shit - like the vassals they were. It's a good thing they weren't needed while she was dodging "sniper fire" in Bosnia.

“I’ve often said there are three questions that would destroy most of the arguments on the left.

The first is: ‘Compared to what?’

The second is: ‘At what cost?’

And the third is: ‘What hard evidence do you have?’

According to what first handers - Gary Bryne? Who's "shocking" "tell all" book has been roundly panned and discredited, including by other secret service members.

Wll, jagger, of course you were right.

Had a democratic president done this, they would scream bloody murder.

Even if the Trumpster fire spreads even further, more excuses will be found

“I’m not voting for Clinton,” Air Force Staff Sergeant Eric Bonner posted on Facebook in July.

“It’s because she actually talked to me once. Almost a sentence,” wrote the Air Force K-9 handler. “I got to do a few details involving Distinguished Visitors.”

“One of my last details was for Hillary when she was Secretary of State,” Bonner continued. “I helped with sweeps of her DV quarters and staff vehicles. Her words to me?”

According to Bonner, Clinton told him, “Get that f***ing dog away from me.”

“Then she turns to her security detail and berates them up and down about why that animal was in her quarters,” Bonner added. “For the next 20 minutes, while I sit there waiting to be released, she lays into her detail, slamming the door in their faces when she’s done. The Detail lead walks over, apologizes, and releases me. I apologize to him for getting him in trouble. His words, ‘Happens every day, Brother.’”

“Hillary doesn’t care about anyone but Hillary.”

Flashing back on Michelle Bachman (among other similarly deluded repubs) claiming an Obama trip to India was going to cost 200 MILLION per day. :1orglaugh:

I remember all too well!

I ask myself:

Will the new Air Force One be gold-plated, as it HAS to be for the new king? He was tweeting about its cost some time ago, now he is waiting for it to be finished, it appears

Dear Ze Fly:

I really enjoy reading the prospective of Europeans and I always gain a lot of new insight into the hopes and fears of our European friends.

Hopefully through this journey of the Trump presidency, we will come to a few agreements from time to time but in the end the exchange of opinions and ideas will bring us closer together.

Love,.

“The reason the Secret Service is forced to work its agents on unsustainable overtime and travel schedules has little to do with the size of Trump’s family. The portfolio of protectors expanded dramatically after the September 11 attacks during the G.W. Bush administration, too. It also has little to do with the travel schedule. Barack Obama kept a heavy travel schedule throughout most of his presidency,” Bongino wrote in an op-ed on Conservative Review.

Secret Service Director Randolph Alles, in clarification to USA Today’s breathless report, later said funding for roughly 1,100 agents working overtime in 2017 is not an issue “that can be attributed to the current Administration’s protection requirements alone, but rather has been an ongoing issue for nearly a decade due to an overall increase in operational tempo.”

“The Secret Service has the funding it needs to meet all current mission requirements for the remainder of the fiscal year and compensate employees for overtime within statutory pay caps,” he said in the statement. “The Secret Service estimates that roughly 1,100 employees will work overtime hours in excess of statutory pay caps during calendar year 2017. Our agency experienced a similar situation in calendar year 2016 that resulted in legislation that allowed Secret Service employees to exceed statutory caps on pay.”
The statement continued: “To remedy this ongoing and serious problem, the agency has worked closely with the Department of Homeland Security, the administration, and the Congress over the past several months to find a legislative solution.”

Another day, another fake news story.
