Tipping/Gratuity

I've worked in hotels here and there & I've been a bartender/waiter.
1$ for a bag for the bellboy is absolutely ridiculous. Should be at least 2.50 or 3$ per bag.
I understand some say the service must be exceptional but that has to be up to the bellboy/bartender/waiter.
If a waiter is crap, he knows it and he/she should expect to recieve what they give.
Common sense, they know it too.
If someone decides to never tip based on principal then they're a moron and don't understand how things work, they shouldn't be allowed to go to restaurants.

If you only want to eat a steak and don't think you deserve to pay extra just buy one at the grocery store and eat it at home.
You're paying for a service, pay accordingly.
Thanks!

Mr. Pink:
"I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job."

Just a crazy quote from the movie!

Thank God i live in England, im never "forced" into tipping, like i was when i lived in USA/Canada.

I only tip when they actually do a good job. If im in a resturant and the service is bad, like fuck am i going to tip them.

And like another thing brought up in that classic scene, If you tip a waitress how come you don't tip the guys at McDonalds? Since when is their job any harder?...

It is interesting to point out "ALL-INCLUSIVE VACATION HOTELS" in the Carribean do not require you to pay tips.

You pay one price and have all the free drinks. But the locals are the ones who lose out. I did tip those guys and they gladly accept the gratitude with great pleasure !

only in large groups are we forced to tip. If we go to a restaurant I don't have to tip, it is just assumed/expected that I tip for the service

It makes my head spin.

Tipping aside, I remember when I was in the US (for an extended period) that the restaurant staffs changed seemingly monthly - no matter what range.

In Italy, and in most of the European countries that I've visited or lived in, the staff (and owners) see the job as a profession, so they tend to be there for years and years.

As far as tipping, I usually just round out the bill.

usually the gratuity is included in the all-inclusive deals

that reminds me of someone going to Vegas, sitting in the sports book and thinking they can watch the game, drink and not have to tip the waitress...

money talks

if they want that waitress to keep coming back they better tip her on EVERY SINGLE DRINK

I don't want to get off topic, but isn't it her job anyway to keep coming back! ;) :dunno:

Sometimes, to an outsider of the tipping culture, it seems crass. I've seen people leave big bills as a tip and then look around to see who was watching - I've also seen people act like complete and total asses to the staff, under the premise that a big tip would make up for their boarish behavior.

Don't get me wrong - when I'm in the US, I tip....

whether it's merited or not.

Because its illegal to tip somebody who has an hourly wage. But seriously.. I wouldnt tip the cashier, I'd tip the cook. But I just cant do that.. soo.. The system is fuct. America is too work-oriented.. you work your ass off just to make ends meet, and its still not enough.

There are people here in Canada and the USA to (I would assume) that are servers and restaurant staff for there profession.

Bu then again there are those who are only servers when they are going to college or university, because they live off of the tips and the hours can be so flexible at some of the establishments that it is great for them. I even know some people who have taken a job as a server over an office job, for the tips alone

BNF: yes, her job is to keep coming back...but just watch how fast she runs for the guy who doesn't tip vs. the guy who does...I would do the same

Torre82min: I am in the U.S., where is it illegal to tip someone who has an hourly wage?

Have you tried not tipping? You get the nastiest look from people. I had a server who took forever to get to us, drinks were never filled and our food took at least an hour+ to get in a restaruant that was basically empty. I had no intention of tipping him but I wasnt going to ask for change either, so I rounded the bill to the closed denomination and left it at that and I still got a nasty look from the moron.

In the same establishment, during a busy time, I had this wonderful server who despite having multiple tables made every effort to see like she wasnt rushed and make sure we were served properly. Its these differences that make tipping an issue, some of them deserve it and others think they deserve it simply because.

The advantage of places that take care of the tip-out for you is that you see the flat price and you pay that. Theres no iffy guessing about how much extra to do or anything. The disadvantage is that the server can basically do what the first guy I mentioned did and still get as much as a tip as the second person.

I'll see it this way, I worked hard for my money and I can choose how to spend it. If I dont want to tip someone, I wont even if that means taking a few nasty stares and comments.

what the fuck you lookin at?
Wow all this talk about restaurants. Well i deliver furniture and YES we take tips!!! Not gonna say what I make an hour but it's more than minimum and less than 15/hr so use your imagination. Yea delivering furniture is my fuckin job and I realize this! But god fuckin damn it...if we have to go to an extra amount of bullshit to get your shit delivered without fuckin it up and manage to be polite and friendly all while gettin our asses kicked...WE DESERVE A LITTLE FUCKIN SOMETHING!!!!! I realize that tipping delivery guy's isn't an obvious thing. I never expect it, but like I said there are time when you should because of the extra work involved! Like just today, for example, we had a heavy ass leather sofa to deliver to a 6th floor apt. Keep in mind 3rd floor usually the max around here. Beyond that there are elevators...well it wouldn't fit in the elevator, big fuckin surprise! Some ghetto ass shit hole in michigan! So we had to lug this thing up 12 flights of stairs!!! Which were concret so settin it down wasn't really an option. By the time we finally got it up there we were both dead! Totally exausted. Still we were polite as hell and even bullshited with the guy while we put some tables together for him. Not a scratch on this damn coutch! So what do we get for this??? "Thanks alot guy's, looks good, have a nice day" Ok you too! :thefinger :thefinger :thefinger

I sure get pissed off when I go out for a meal with friends and get crappy service. I should know by now that when I get crappy service to not pay by debit card. But I did, and when you pay with debit, they always ask you what amount you want to add in for a tip. Damn I hate how they screw me over and make me tip for horrible service. I don't want to tip, but if I don't I feel guilty and greedy

Restraint Server - 15 - 20% of the check

What is a restraint server?

Two thoughts;

On the cruise ships, the busboy was expected to get a tip half of that of the server, not an equal amount. But he worked twice as many tables. Depending on what line you're on, you might get exceptional service from an expert server who keeps a cold glass of pineapple juice on the table for you at all times, or a kid on Summer vacation who shrugs his shoulder's like "how the F should I know" when you ask how some dish is prepared.

Included gratuities;

I was taken out to dinner in a group of about 10 or 12, to Red Lobster, a place with a packed parking lot that I think is expensive, with mediocre food and poor service. We were given a table in a bit of a tight spot, but not too bad to move through. The waitress constantly asked me to pass down dishes to others in the corner, didn't make sure the table was cleared at all when the dishes were stacked high, until being asked several times, and then once or twice more when it happened again. She didn't return with the beers when asked more then once, and finally I got another waiter to go get her. But she was right their interrupting to ask if "everything was okay" when there weren't dishes to clear or beers to serve.

Came to $300 I think it was and the person taking us out handed her some larger bill amount to pay for it. She never came back with the change and our host got tired of waiting so just walked out. With the mandatory 15% she made at least $45, shirked most of the work, but didn't work anywhere near enough to deserve what she got. Sometimes the service is exceptional sometimes I guess it's lousy. :2 cents:

I was just waiting for somebody to ask that question

It is supposed to be restaurant server, but because I spell checked and I speled it wrong, it was substituted with the next best option.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be picky. I fixed it so no one will ask again.

I thought maybe it was someone who would strap little kids and old people in their chairs so they won't act up.

again, if you get crappy service in the U.S., call for the manager

thier job is to insure that the server is doing their job and to make sure you are satisfied

if you don't get a satisfactory answer, contact the owner or corporate office of the establishment. You'd be surprised on how far you'd get. You may get a comped meal or something off your check. Maybe even a free dessert.

On the flip side to this, don't be like some people I have seen and look for a fight just to try to get something for free.
