Tiny nuclear batteries' unveiled

funny thing is, there's big business in (current)battery production and sales. Too many people will lose jobs if this becomes the norm. :cool:

I am sure the industry is huge and there will be great opposition, probably not disimilar situation we perhaps had when large parts of the world were being electrified (from gas) in the early part of the last century! In the end demand and I think progress will triumph, there will however be certain safety issues to consider!
 
If they can get the technology to the point in which these are safe to use and long lasting then it will be a major step forward.

"Normal" batteries that last a couple days are far too annoying and inconvenient to still be around. :D

They have developed it in an attempt to scale down power sources for the tiny devices that fall under the category of micro- and nano-electromechanical systems

And nanotech is coming fast...esp. in electrical and plastics technology.

A little knowledge goes a WRONG WAY!

Obviously nobody here understands what a RTG is. I've been talking about them for years. RTGs are what the ignorant masses protest against. They are harmless. But because they are "radioactive" we have screaming idiots and protests.

So in this case, if you understand what RTGs are, you'd recognize these batteries won't power ****. That's why they are harmless. These are extremely low-power. They won't even power a typical wrist watch.

RTGs are merely radioactive materials decaying as they would in nature. They barely shoot of anything of any concern. Enclosed and sealed, there is no issue. Even if you break the seal, there is little concern.

In a spacecraft's RTG, you have tens of pounds of a radioactive material. And what you'll get is enough to power a lighbulb or two. Now we're talking trace amounts. That's not even enough to power, again, a wrist watch.

That's why these conversations are best left to people with engineering degrees, or at least those with technical experience in power design. Because such people can understand the basic concepts of energy.

The more power, the more potential stored. The more potential stored, the more energy. The more energy, the more danger. You can't have energy without stored potential so you can't have energy without danger.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to bang my head on a wall and remind myself why the masses shouldn't be reading such articles. For example ...

Yes, if you don't mind carrying around almost as much radioactive material as what the rest of the car weighs (not including the encasing). To get the kilowatts required to move the car would require hundreds of kilograms of radioactive material. ;) Oh, BTW, it would be expensive and it would very much start to be a health issue (let alone, again, the weight of the encasing and other details would add even more weight).

Again, please, one has to understand how these things work. These designs are going to be power centers for nanomachines, not anything that is normally powered by a typical battery cell. Again, I'm pounding my head on a wall here. Damn me for being an electrical engineer, although anyone with a remote understanding of basic power design (no degree required) would be laughing (and ******) here.

I read an article about some new battery tech a while ago that used a gel material that stored a lot of energy, and was light weight and sturdy. It coulda been Litium Ion but it didn't say...it was a Harley tech mag, and I thought that was the next good source of electric vehicle battery tech...my Lithium Ion cordless drill kicks ass, lighter by half and works harder longer.
There is a breakthrough still to be found that will make it work for the masses, but for now I just want my flying car Popular mechanics promised me in the '50s!

The problem with the countless Lithium Ion combinational, rechargeable designs is that they don't last long. Their internal circuitry eats up power, the cells ******* the more they hold a charge and are not utilized, but they will die off quickly if depleted and not recharged. Virtually all Lithium Ion usable "half-life" seems to be 1 year if heavily utilized, 2 years if the greatest care is taken. Auto consumers would find them wholly unacceptable if they had to replace them within 3 years for certain.

That's why Li-Ion has been regulated to electronics that require high-current for shorter-term need -- from cameras to notebooks.

BTW, people should not confuse rechargeable, various Lithium Ion materials with non-rechargeable, Li-Fe (Energizer 1.5V), Li-Mg (CR 3.0V standard) and other lithium, two-metal technologies. The non-rechargeable lithium two-metal designs actually hold charges for decades. But they are not rechargeable.
 
Small nuclear batteries are small pocket sized hologram projectors not too far in the making.
 
This is going to be awesome! Unless of course the terrorists get hold of them and dismantle, use the nuclear energy, and nuke a city. :eek:

If I keep a couple of these in my trouser pockets can I stop buying condoms? Would they irradiate my (recently exposed at the pool) balls?
