The Terri Schiavo situation.

I was waiting for somebody else to start talking about this, but here i am !
So what are you're thoughts, who's right and who's wrong ?

Speaking for myself i would have really like for her to not die that way... she should die in a more "human" way. There's really something wrong in letting someone starve to death...

I was going to start a thread about this topic but I figured that the issue seems so polarized that it would just lead to flaming.

I think she should be allowed to die, per her own wishes, as soon as possible, and I am happy that the U.S. courts have decided NOT to intervene on behalf of the nutcase "right to life" wackos out there. This has jack shit to do with abortion, but Republicans are making this into an abortion issue for political means.

I don't want Congress interfering with MY choices about my body/healthcare and my life. I don't want the government in my bedroom, birthroom, bathroom, or deathroom. This is a hugely inappropriate political move by "conservatives," and it has blown up in their faces.

This issue happens daily to lots of people. But get a Bush involved, and it's worldwide news. :ban: lol

Terri Schiavo's soul has been imprisoned in her shell of a body for 15 years. YES, she responds to light. So do plants. It's called phototropism. There's nothing in her mind left. She DOES NOT SPEAK, contrary to what some wackos have said. She is in a persistent vegetative state. She's DEAD, yet alive.

Let her go home to God (or whatever you believe in or don't believe in). Let the poor woman go. Give her a shot/injection of something and let her go without suffering... This nightmare of hers needs to end so she can be at peace and no longer be a political pawn.

I agree TOTALLY with you Nightfly, they should mind their damn business and let her die. People talk about the quality of life, there IS no quality of life here
They need to let her go, and let her die with dignity

Who should have the decision to make it though if she hasn't specified? The husband or the parents?

After this case I spoke with my wife's parents and told them that I would rather kill Heather myself than to have her lie like that for more than 5 years. I need to get laid. And Im not gonna do it to a veggie. They laughed of course and agreed, but for other reasons.

If I end up a veggie I hope my wife tells them to kill me as soon as I have any brain damage. "Ooop Brain Damage.. Kill the bastard."

I agree..I know that I would not want to lie in a hospital bed for 15 years in a 'vegetative state'. I agree with her husband's decision and her parents should respect his right to make those decisions. He is her legal guardian for a reason.

the amazing thing about bushes stance on the issue is as govener of texas he passed a law giving individual hospitals the power to take people in a persistant vegative state off of life support so that they do not drain the finaces of the medical system! (of course they would give some warning to the familys so they could make new acomendations if they wished) but it is amazing what people will do for a political wedge.

The pictures we see of her on the news are old, I have not seen anything of her recently. Her parents say she responds to talking and even mumbles words. I believe she does not. Her wishes should be granted.
Before my mother pased away, she asked that we not keep her alive with a "machine." When her time came we had the opportunity to prolong her life, but at what quality of life. We honored her wishes and she passed away peacefully.

Im taking a professional ethics course and one of the things my professor has to say constantly to a lot of hard headed people in my class is... "Legal and Moral don't always hold hands."

I forgot about that. That explains it.

As for me. I would like to know what she actually said about the situation when she was of sound mind. Assuming she gave no opinion, well, I guess I'd leave it up to the spouse.
Just make sure there is no insurance policy or anything. lol.

lol ya man if there was an insurance policy he has waited a REALLY long time to collect

She's been in a vegetative state for 15 years. Time to let her go... None of this "err on the side of life" Republican crap will convince me otherwise. As harold pointed out, and as I had heard before, Bush has before signed legislation authorizing hospitals to remove feeding tubes for indigent people after a certain time period, and Terri Schiavo's family have no money left, and they haven't for years. She's been trapped in her shell of a body for years, suffering, and the public have been paying for her prolonged agony.

She wanted to die in this scenario. She told her husband beforehand. Why can't she be allowed to die and move on? POLITICS. Sad...

great points made above, i say let her go

Side with life all you want, but this woman has been dead for 15 years... She's a corpse kept alive by machines and her brain is dead. "Compassionate conservatism" would let her die without pain and suffering, not keep her alive and for using her as a political pawn.

The "compassionate conservatives" have gone all wrong on this one, trying to use her as a right to life banner, and it has blown up like a powder keg in their faces!!!

Let the woman's suffering end. Euthanize her. Give her some peace, for GOD'S SAKE. :2 cents:
