The Simpsons Poised To Make TV History

The Simpsons Poised To Make TV History

The Simpsons, TV's longest-running American sitcom, is on tap for at least three more seasons, The New York Post reports.

"The cast is signed for three more years, so I would now say it's about a 90 percent chance we'll come back for at least one of those three," Al Jean, the show's executive producer, said. "I actually think it's better than a 50 percent chance we'll do three more years of this at least."

Should the triple renewal follow through, that would put the animated series at 23 years old - raise your hand if you're younger than it! - which would give it sole bragging rights as the longest-running scripted series, of any genre, ever.

Impressive.

The Simpsons are a real success even in french. I suppose its the same for many coutries.

The Simpsons was a great show, and I say was, because over the last 10 years the show has been sinking in quality. It has become increasingly unfunny and stupid, there is no more of the subtlety of the early years anymore, just a quest for cheap gags to appease the masses. The only reason it has gone on this long is because its still profitable and none of the producers are willing to save the shows quality in a quest to milk as much money out of it as possible. There will probably be more movies which will all, like that last one be terrible.

Maybe im wrong, maybe its just me, maybe as I get older I just dont find the same humour funny anymore -although I still find seasons 2 - 6 funny :dunno: - and that if I were at the age when I first started watching years ago I would find it entertaining. But I dont think thats true, it has fallen behind in quality of all the other animated shows out there its no where near as good as South Park or even Family Guy, although thoses are made for older audiences and I suppose that goes back to what I said before, maybe ive grown out of it :dunno:

Anyway, congrats :hatsoff:

Simpsons did it

and BB is right I cant watch it anymore, its not like it was.

I lost interest by year 3. :dunno:

Same here, i mean don't get me wrong i still enjoy watching it, unfortunatly on normal tv they will insist on showing the same episodes over and over again, theres only so much of the same that i can watch.

Good history lesson and right on.

Maybe it's the fact the "ivy leaguers" are gone and it's just slapstick now. I read somewhere that they used to take "sideswipes" and now just "broadside" and I think that's right.

Ok, it must be incredibly tough to be new or original after so long, but it's no excuse for the LCD standards. Simpsons's was great because you often needed to watch an episode 3 or 4 times to get all of the sublety, hidden meanings, references, homages and so on.

Now, and since c2000, it watches like a cheap imitation.

All things considered, though, congrats!

I like The Simpsons and it's streak of staying on TV is somewhat impressive, but...

I find it to lose some luster just because it's a cartoon. I'd be more impressed if it was a live-action show with real actors. Actors and actresses get old, which make it nearly impossible to have a live-action sitcom run for more than a few years. But, with cartoons, the characters can age "as the writers want", so it can stay on the air forever.

But, whatever.

Oh god I still love the Simpsons! And theyre still funny. I watch them every single day!
Old episodes, new episodes. All of them. I already watched all episodes millions of times and I still love 'em.

Now...

:nanner: Do the Bart-Man yeah... everyone does the Bart-Man :booty: :wiggle:

But I also think that the show has been sinking in quality in the last couple of years, but its still great.

Even longer than Red Skelton? Wow! :D

Congrats Simpsons!

I concur, the show has been sinking in quality. As BNF mentioned, the show is a lot more blunt in its satire now, but without the edginess of subject matter presented in Family Guy, for instance. Family Guy's gags sometimes leave you saying, "Did they really do that?" while The Simpsons often comes off flat.

I still watch and enjoy the Simpsons, and think it is still better than most stuff on network TV, but I don't think it can reclaim its glory.

I'll agree with everyone that yes the Simpsons have lost some of it's touch in the funny factor but it is still very entertaining there are still laughs there. I'm still a frequent watcher of new Simpsons episodes. For all of you that say family guy and south park are funnier now, have you seen the new episodes of those? Both Family Guy and South Park have gotten bland and less funny rather quickly. I also watch both of them along with the Simpsons regularly so I'm not biased. My point is that those shows have been on a fraction of how long the Simpsons have been on yet the Simpsons still can compete with them and i think it's marvelous. I think all 3 are still funny of course not as when it was during their early years.

The Simpsons earlier seasons were great, innovative, and original. Now they have regressed toward the mean which is normal in everything. Their early creative years coupled with their longevity and ability to stay relevant makes them a legend.
