The Secret World

Yeah, it actually is pretty much crap, which is unfortunate because I had high hopes for this.

I even skipped the beta hoping to avoid the pre-launch lameness. It might turn out OK, though, after further expansions.

Heh. I don't know, I remain an optimist. ;)

The premise looks interesting enough with the whole Lovecraft lore, but not interesting enough for a monthly subscription. I might look in to it if it goes free-to-play.

I've been waiting for this mmo for quite some time, however, I've decided I'm going to wait till it's f2p. I'm not paying 40 euro AND a subscription fee based on the reviews I've been reading.

It's a good game concept with some serious problems at this point, although it has interesting potential. It's not awesome.

If Steve Jackson somehow acquired $100 million, used that to restart Troika, and Kevin Siembieda was then contracted to assist in developing a Rifts MMO, we might actually see an awesome online game in our future.

This would probably require summoning the ghost of Gary Gygax, and the Accursed Hand Of Vecna would be involved in some way, so unfortunately that's probably not going to happen anytime soon. I remain hopeful though.

Does anyone have The Gygax Summoning spell? I believe it may have been included in the original Temple Of Elemental Evil module release. . .

:/

A Rifts MMO? I don't know. The mechanics of it would have to be nothing like the table top game. For a system that a lot of people see as incredibly unbalancing it wouldn't go good in a MMO, a genre where more players are concern about that to the point of ridiculousness.

That's the problem, a good game build should be "unbalanced". A balanced design just allows everyone to do the same thing all the time, depending (basically) on a THAC0 level.

Here's an example: In the first release of Everquest, my main character was a Gnome Mage, I leveled him up to 14 so he could cast invisibility, and never gained XP after that. Everyone I knew playing the game had no idea why I stopped leveling, but while they were going through all night dungeon raids, my character was hanging out in Freeport, brewing ****, and selling dimensional pockets at the gate.

My mage also traveled the entire world, attended "Best Of The Best" competitions in the Arena, watched 150 wood elves fall out of the trees of Kelethin, and at some point nearly drowned in the ocean because he walked off a boat while ***** on Minotaur Hero Ale. Great stories.

That's how you make a game. ;)

I started playing it this past weekend. It's decent enough for me to stick with for a little while.

Since MMO's are meant to be around for years, I usually feel you don't get a good enough feel for the game until you've played it for at least a few months. I tend to pay the 6 month lump sum fee and make my decision whether or not to stay after that.

My guy uses a ***** and shotgun, which I think is cool as hell.

It's a great concept, but the game mechanics regarding character abilities suck. As far as I can see at the moment, all three hundred abilities just apply to ******/defense. There appears to be no stealth options, no changing dialog tree options with NPC's, and there are no personal stats (beyond the goofy "ability wheel").

I'm still trying to be interested in this game.

And that's why I haven't bought it yet.

Wonder if they'll be at Gamescom again next month...

I don't want to turn anyone off from buying TSW, it does have amazing potential, and if FunCom/ EA doesn't turn a profit off this (and continue to run servers) then I've thrown $50 into the garbage can.

;)

I'll probably pay the subscription fee for the first month it's required (the initial month is free), just because this game does seem crazy cool. I'm just not completely blown away by it yet, and honestly have only loaded it up a couple times so far.

For anyone interested, here's the link to the opening cinematic (It even features a brief appearance of Cthulhu at the end, so it's that going for it, which is nice. . .):

Premium Link Upgrade

Beyond that, though, it honestly is a bit. . . meh
