The Rise of Android: What Does It Mean for Apple, Users?

It doesn't change any already established definitions. Just change "Microsoft" to "Google" when describing how Steve Jobs and Apple get their ass handed to them.

It is so funny how some people want to rip on this thing or that thing. Its the same fight as the xbox vs playstation vs nintendo. It all comes down to what a person wants. Yes I have an Iphone, why? Well lets see, I need a smart phone to handle email, internet searches, calenders and appointments while I am out in the country. I also want a phone that sinc's easily with my computer, my car, my home stereo. The droid is not bad, but the problem is Verizons services are lacking once I get outside the city. The HTC, thats pretty cool, but sprints services where I am, ha dont steo more then 2 feet or you will loose all connection. So this leaves me with one option centennial wireless now owned by AT&T. The best phone AT&T has is the iphone. It handles everything I need plus I can actually connect to both data part and the actual phone where the others give me "no service" messages. Also, if I am really in the boonies which happens atleast once a week, I can switch back to centennials 2g service and get 3 bars anywhere but I lose my data plan while on the 2g network. Oh yeah netflix is on the iphone now which pretty much takes care of all my movie issues.

i have nothing against the iphone but god i hate iphone users! the fewer the better. Go Android

Its comments like this by people like this that make me not want to buy that product. Even if the android would stick out a soft pink tongue like Gianna Micheals and lick my balls, I wouldnt want the phone because I would always think of the fact that someone who has this narrow minded attitude uses the samething I do. So to you sir who likes to lump people in a single group and make nasty comments, I think you have proven the point to stay away from the android.

This really doesn't mean anything, because Research In Motion will always be dominant!!!!

Blackberries RIM Jobs.

Does anyone remember when a phone was just a fucking phone. I don't know if it's the fact that most of my friends are poor, but I only know like 3 people who have a "smartphone" everyone else just has a regular phone with the most advanced feature being customized ringtone. Why do you need your phone be able to do all this shit for? Buy a computer. Do you really need to bust your phone out and check your 401K or some stupid shit while you're walking down the street? smartphones are for pretentious assholes who want to show off, and their fate is being hit by a bus while not paying attention. agree?

I get my emails as well as text and phone capabilities and can browse the web (including this awesome site). When I get bored waiting for the lady of the house to get herself ready to go out, I can play a game or browse the net. Once said little lady is ready and we are wandering around trying to work out where this little known bistro is hidden, I can google map it and it will take me to the door. It is vital to me in business to enable my clients to keep in contact via email.
You, my friend, are misguided in your assessment that smartphones are for pretentious assholes who want to show off. Admittedly there are some people like that, however, as communication has developed, so has the business need to keep up with those developments.

I coulndt agree with you more Larss, though there are days I wish I was not able to be reached as easily. It does make it very easy to help people in thier homes with getting the right medical equipment, the right physician, setting physician appointments and jsut overall management of my clients. A lap top is big and bulky to use. My phone is ideal to handle the job I preform.

For Apple being so "hip" and "with the times," I find it fascinating that they only contract with AT&T, one of the oldest companies out there. They definitely need to broaden their horizons, or be left in the dust.

Was that comment provided by your iPhone's IRONY app? :1orglaugh

That's what gets me about the iPhone. It isn't really a phone. It's an awkward user-unfriendly hand-held computer that happens to be capable of being marginally used to make phone calls. It doesn't do either of those functions well. All those "cool" apps? I rarely use them. As CBC says, if I need to really do some serious work on the web, I use a computer, not a goddamned phone for chrissakes.

I absolutely hate the iPhone in particular and all touch-screen "smart" phones in general.

Apple will be fine because they have created a distinct target marker also Apple products currently and i see no reason to change run superior to androids. i say this as an android owner planning to switch to Apple within the next few months.

In order for the iphone to work they need to expand, I can see the android becoming more popular in the long rund because of its broad horizon of uses without the restrictions. I like apples ideas and love it when another companys takes those and improves upon them.

Its a competitive electronics market, kinda reminds me of th old schools Beta, VHS wars.

I went with a droid phone because I can't get AT&T service but a lot of my friends have iphones, one even has the new one. I Think the droid is easier to use, especially when it comes to downloading apps. I don't have to put a password every time I need to update something. But at the same time I think Google shot themselves in the foot by releasing a full google app on the iphone today, giving out a lot of the great android google apps that should of stayed with droid. Its okay though, another part of droids that I like is that its not one company making the phone, its many different companies. So If I don't like the look or feel of the samsung I can get the Motorola.

It's just the little things that end up adding up for me when it comes to Droid phones. I think Apple will have to more than bring out a gaint Ipod touch / new design to get the train moving again. I heard they were still in contract negotiations with verizion so maybe they will be leaving the AT&T brand and moving there. we shall see.

The iphone may have been one of the first of it's kind, but often times the first thing to come out ends up losing in the long haul. Apple really needs to update its design/capabilities if they want their phone to compete with the Android and phones like it. But in a year or two the droid won't be shit and we'll be on to something better, that's how it goes with technology

As a nurse clinnician, I have to be able to access a secure database with peoples medical information. I also need to do it while way out in the country on the corner of dirt road 1 and dirt road 2. Where I live geographically neither verizon or sprint has any semblance of a signal. I get reception well with AT&T because they bought up the centennial towers when the purchased cenbtennial. Centennial had the best service by far. Those of you who live in a big city or by heavily populated areas probably dont have this issue, there a cell towers on every building top. I have to be picky on good coverage and AT&T is the one. As for a computer usage. Let mne see, I have to lug a stethescope, gown's, gloves, medical supplies, blood pressure cuff, sometimes an EKG machine and all the paperwork associated with the task at hand. I also have to be able to log onto a secure site and access a secure server.. Hmm lug an additional 5lbs computer or just use my iphone, neither the droid or the HTC can do it so hmm I think I will stick my great functioning iphone that can actually get a signal. If anything, I think the other machines should jump ship to AT&T and get off those archaic slow to grow companies. Maybe then I might concider a different phone.

thats exactly the point that i think apple has as it advantage the iphone has stayed at the top no matter how many new phones come and go and android will just be another to come and go

With this android, can i expect to be able to ask for dinner, "massage", house cleaning ?

Otherwise, what i am expected from a phone it is to be able to call anybody at anytime and everywhere

Personally I have an android phone, HTC Hero. Although its slow at times, I am perfectly fine with it. It does what I need it to do which is call and text. The market is nice too because alot of the apps are free. Plus it was A LOT cheaper than the iPhone
