The pope has croaked

You say it breaks international law by disallowing women to run to be Pope... is the Vatican as a seperate state even covered by such laws?

No, I imagine it is not. But I just find it near inexcuseable that they bar women to the priesthood. And this is coming from a guy on a porn chat room who lusts over women on a near daily basis. So I am no feminist.
These rules of the Catholic church were made , what, hundreds of years ago. A time when the earth was completely and totally ruled by white guys. Slavery, child labour and wife abuse were all common and legal. Times have changed. And if the Catholic church doesn't want to eventually fade into nothingness - it had better change too.

dudes I know the pope was the head of the catolic church and so had to enforce and believe in catolic beliefs, which as is appears some of you disaggree with, but surrley you all give him the respect he deserves for acting on his beliefs no-matter how you disaggree with said views. He was a man who believed in his faith till he died - that surly deserves some respect. IMO

With all due respect...you are saying that I should admire a man because he believed in his faith 'til he died? Well, so did Mao. But he ain't getting my respect. So did Stalin. So did Lenin.
I judge people by one thing above all else - how they treat others. He could have taken the church forward and ended up inderectly saving thousands of lives and causing far less personal suffering for others. Now his intentions may have been good. But the end result was not - imo.
And in all honesty. I think if he were an absolute scumbag - which he did not seem to be - that people all over the world would still mourn his loss. Just because he was the Pope. Apparently when Stalin died tens of millions were in terrible mourning. Terrified of how they would go on without him.
People have to stop respecting people because they have titles. They mean nothing.
Would someone please tell me what this guy did that was SO worthy of praise during his very long tenure other then he travelled alot, he helped end Communism (but many people can take far more credit then him for that) - at least in his birth country of Poland, and what?
Did he do any harm? Probably not. But he could have done SO much more. And I am not going to praise someone up and down for that.
He may have been an alright guy -more or less. But he does not warrant all the praise he is getting.
There are people in the world who do SO much more for it then he has - and yet they babrely get noticed. But just because he is elected Pope by a bunch of old white guys he is praised forever.
Nope. I need more then that. I was ALOT sadder when Mother Teresa died then when the Pope kicked off. And she was just the first example that popped into my head.

You're right about mother Teresa she did alot more charity work with AIDS in Africa and other diseases which thousands of children die from in countrys like Chad or Sudan. I still imo personally feel he deserves alot of the praise he is getting as he helped people through difficult times as i said earlier who are both none religous and catholics, alot of people say he was a selfish man but with power comes resposibility and lets face it if anyone else in the world had his power then they would also be selfish and come out with some of the strongly conservative opinions which where obviously preying (no pun intended) on his mind.

You may or not be right. I think there are others that might have done better. Maybe not.

The bottom line is the fact that he was a Pope means absolutely nothing to me in terms of respect. Just like many think the President of the US deserves respect because he is just that - the President of the world's most powerful country. Again, his title means nothing to me. Nothing.
Finally, if I met Queen Elizabeth or Prince Charles or any other monarch - I hope to God that I don't bow or whatever I am supposed to do (not that I will ever meet them). I wouldn't give them the finger either. I would just hope I would shake her/his hand. But no human being should bow for any other human being.

WE ARE ALL EQUALS. And NO ONE is better then anyone else. I swear most of the people that go wacko for the Pope want to believe that some are greater then others. That HE was greater then others.
As long as people believe that, this world has no hope for relative happiness for all. None that I can see anyway.

He was a man. No more and no less.
Almost everyone on here seems to be younger then me. And I probably thought the way you did (well, sort of) when I was your ages. But if your mind is open to knowledge; one day you will probably feel as I do. It is inevitable.
He was a man. No more worthy of praise then the guy/gal down the street that volunteers to help the needy whenever he gets the chance.
But I imagine that the Pope probably isn't as pathetic as me. So I'd best shut up about him.
That is all.

just regarding the fact that the Pope can't be a woman, as far as I know it's allowed to have a religion with its own rules... For the Vatican's presidence, there are different men that run political stuff.
If it's not, they teached me something wrong at school :)

Good, bad, and the ugly.

This topic has actually got quite interesting...

Religion, for me, is useless. I cant believe in things I cant see and touch, nine times out of ten. I can however recognise the fact it brings a lot to the lives of many, and as an extension of that, so did the Pope. He was the figure head for a whole religion, a focal point, about as close to an avatar of holiness as you can get. Doesnt mean everything he did was right, or everything was wrong.

I am glad McRocket has challenged some traditional viewpoints here - I liked his idea about the inaction of the Pope causing suffering in regards to things such as molestation from a result of marriageless priests. The validity of that is probably impossible to measure, but did make me think can someone in that position of responsibilty simply go along with tradition and rules all the times if by their inaction people come to harm?

I can only say this much about the Pope's passing: whatever he believed in, whether right or wrong in some people's eyes, he did believe in wholeheartedly until his last days. He should be at least admired and respected for that.

I'm not a full believer in religion because there are so many views in each religion that make conflicting claims. And when someone tries to delve deeper into these views, they are branded as heretics and such. This is the aspect I find most disheartening.
