The Oblivion Thread

This game is like Crack. I play it all the time. Just finished all Guild quests and I'm now finishing up the main quest. Getting all the Daedric artifacts is awesome too.

So, your hard drive got wiped? That doesn't sound good at all.

I bought a new hard drive, 320gig serial ata one this time. I also have an external with everything backed up. No mistakes ever again.

I played oblivion intensely for maybe 2 weeks.. before getting thoroughly tired with its shortcomings. I modded the game up so the weapons stayed balanced.. (you could sneak-arrow ANYONE at level 1 but 20 levels later its easier to whip out a cheap blade and slice them instead of hitting them a dozen times otherwise)

It really took me out of the experience because the game gets more difficult the better your skills and level get. There is no reward for buffing stats and level.

The quests were go-here, get-that fare.. which cant be helped; but considering the loading time for simple quests.. eh, it just wasnt worth it for me. When the oblivion overhaul mod gets a couple more tweaks.. hell yes. Better than morrowind in so many ways, but worse in others.

Still, some quests are awesome. And the sneaking system is vastly improved.

TES IV: Oblivion Mods, namely Body Mods ...

Resurrecting this old thread ...

Not directly related, so I posted in a new thread (and another part of the board):
http://board.freeones.com/showthread.php?t=259395

Although the game is a bit aged, but many mods -- along with the fact that the game was designed for cutting edge hardware at its release (and PC hardware that didn't exist yet at very high settings/resolutions) -- can really give it some serious eye-candy during your adventures (along with new, exciting adventures too).

Thanks for the links. Good stuff in there.

I still paly Oblivion once in awhile but Fallout 3 took a lot of the attention away from the latest Elder Scrolls game.

Re: RP in Fallout 3 ...

How is the RPG element to Fallout 3? I'm thinking of picking it up. What about mods?

The RPG element is solid and a bit more refined. The character generation system is unique. You play through stages of childhood (but at the end you can wipe it out and create your character however you like).

If you played and enjoyed Oblivion then you will definitely dig Fallout 3.

Mods are beginning to hit now that the construction set (G.E.C.K.) is available but it will take more time to see what the mod community comes up with.

Not to hijack the thread, but I wasn't sure which of these to post in ...

Fallout 3 has great RPG elements.....the only thing I don't like is how your character cannot move past level 20.....not sure why they decided to do that. The game is incredible though. I have no life right now......it's been Fallout 3 non-stop.

i purchased this game a few months ago (never a big RPG fan until Fallout3)
and over the past week i have started to get into oblivion (very late i know)
but i didnt get a manual with the game (used game) i have no idea what the symbols on the top of the inventory screen mean.
i figure the feather (means weight),the shield (protection) the heart (condition of armor/weapon)
and i also have no idea how to "make" magic or create magic what you need to do to make better spells and such. plus some of the potions say "damage for 8secs at level 20" i have no idea what most of this means.
does anyone have a webstie where i can find this out? or can anyone explain it a bit?
thanks

The Oblivion Wiki (along with the three, prior Elder Scrolls games) is your friend:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion

There are spoilers in there, so don't read up too much on missions. Save those for when you really get stuck (and consider re-starting the mission from save). I recommend saving each time you accept a new mission (at least ones you plan to complete at that time).

Of most interest to you to start is under the heading Gameplay Information:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Oblivion#Gameplay_Information

Especially this entry for First Time Players:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:First_Time_Players

BTW, if you didn't note the suggestion ...
"The most important piece of advice is: Play the game! Stop reading this Wiki, and just go have fun enjoying the game. When you're starting out, don't worry about making mistakes, and really don't worry about playing efficiently."

Play one time, say to level 10, and enjoy it. You'll learn much about the game. Then consider re-starting and doing things "more efficiently."

It's up to you, but I do not recommend doing the main quest immediately and rushing out to Kavatch (don't go near it). If you want to rush and do it, it's up to you, especially at lower levels (difficult, but enemies aren't as leveled and any allies are of more help).

One of the things that really makes Oblivion different from almost every other RPG (even Fallout 3 that uses the same, base engine) is that your skills increase by usage, not by level. In fact, you level when you increase your "major" enough times. But you'll want to balance your "major" skills, as well as increase your "minor" skills, so you level up well -- both from the skill abilities to also making sure you can increase 2-3 attributes at +5.

These details are covered in this article on Leveling:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Leveling

I wouldn't get too "wound up" on worrying about leveling your first time through. Just play to level 10 or so and then re-start with a new character (possibly a custom class, based on how you want to level).

I would also recommend doing some of the non-combat quests as much as the combat-based ones. There are several in the Imperial District to start.

Official Mods/Plug-ins and Patches -- NOTE: If you have the Game-of-the-Year (GotY) edition, you have all of the mods, and likely all (or close to all) of the patches.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Official_Plug-ins
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Patch

If you have a PC (not a console) ...

For the 2nd time around (your 2nd new game), consider a few, unofficial Mods and Patches -- you'll see the Unofficial Patches mentioned in quests (where the user community fixed things). NOTE: Loading mods can prevent a prior save game from working, and you have to have to have the same mods often to load a save game.

Unofficial Mods/Patches:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Recommended_Mods

The Oblivion Mod Manager (OBMM) is the best way to manage mods, and even recognized by Bethesda (the publisher).
http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Oblivion_Mods_FAQ#OBMM

It lets you archive up discrete mods (if they aren't already), so they are easy to load'n mix, as well as manage the order. With today's PC video cards, there are so many improvements in how they can handle large textures and other objects. There are also other, useful mods, like a Bag of Holding. ;)

thank you for the above links.
i read your post and i never worry about mistakes or being efficient.
i just needed to better understand the columns in inventory, create magic, use spells.
i walked into Fallout3 NEVER playing an RPG in my life and i hated it at 1st almost stopped playing it completely, gave myself 2 weeks to regroup and then went back to the game and Since then i never looked back . i love RPG games now.
i need to know more about the magic and spells and potions cause all i do is go into places and arm my sword and shield and slash away at everyone.
is there anyone nice around? i came out of the castle, crossed the river met 2 ladies who attacked me. went into that place (???) cleared it,came out went to the Fort, cleared that, went to the Inn got some info, then went down the road a bit and 2 more people attacked me.killed them went into their "area" cleared it out. then i am going to get the witch who brings back the undead up the road from the Inn
i barely walked into their room and they attacked.

The primary Magic index is under the Gameplay listing I sent earlier:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Magic

The Overview entry is a good start:
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Magic_Overview

There is also a good Hints index listed by subject when you want to know more about various subjects:

Cool thanks alot.i wrote to bethesdaGames to see about getting a manual.
its $10 but i need my reciept from the the original NEW game! i didnt but it new i bought it used. i guess they didnt understand my email?

It blows compared to Morrowind. It's decent but nothing that I thought it would be seeing it would be on better technology and having spent a good part of gaming playing Morrowind.

The Wiki is 100x more complete, especially if you get into loading mods (PC).

nope i got the game for 360
I originally started with the Xbox 360 on a 1080p TV back in very late 2005. People used to come over and drool at it.

I later picked up the PC version because you can mod it so much.

Yep i spent many hours on it. Get the expansions there pretty cool.
The official mods (aka Expansions) are great, but some of the unofficial mods make it a killer game for both replay and maximizing the gameplay.

With today's PC cards you can really bump up the textures and quality with several, unofficial add-ons.
