Spice World

Blue Velvet -- which someone mentioned -- is/was over-rated crap imo. his best film is still The Elephant Man.

JFK I really like -- seen it perhaps 4/5 times

Miracle at St. Anna (2008)

Controversial to Italians who don't like their portrayal as Nazi collaborators which makes the whole portrayal of the massacre as historically inaccurate. One of the film's flashbacks shows black soldiers being refused service in a Louisiana diner where German POWs were welcomed, may have been put in for shock value although there had been incidents like this reported in the Deep South during WWII. Also black soldiers rarely served on the front line so again the historical accuracy is questionable.

A lot of these movies are far from controversial!!
Nashville? Three Days of The Condor? Richochet?
& I love your categories, like "Movies based on rape and other disturbing things"

How could I forget one of my favourites The Cell  There was some controversy I vaguely remember at the time of its release over the imagery and/or the film trying to gain sympathy for the serial killer

The Cell (2000)

Kids

Because of its unexpurgated subject matter centering on relatively young teenagers, Kids has been controversial. The film includes much explicit sexual dialogue and depicts scenes of date rape, physical violence, drug dealing, alcohol abuse, theft, seduction of barely post-pubescent minors, and (non-explicit) teenage sexual displays, as well as (apparently) adolescent actors/actresses in near but not quite explicit exposure. The original version of the film was rated NC-17 in the US

The film caused controversy upon its release, because it dealt with topics such as underage sexual behavior along with drug and alcohol abuse and self-mutilation.

Kids was awesome. :nanner:

The whole "sympathy for the serial killer" thing had been done 40 years previously in Peeping Tom. Now that really was a controversial film for its time. & still a classic British movie.

^^yep, Peeping Tom I really liked too !

Sorry guys, you GOT that wrong. Anything still playing on Youtube cannot be controversial. Its an oxymoron.

For the cinephiles, what about Dogtooth,or The Brown Bunny? Also, haven't seen anyone mention Requiem For A Dream.Maybe not that controversial, but certainly a conversation starter(and ender) that most people don't want to see more than once.

Hard Candy,Little Children and Happiness also deserve a mention.Especially Happiness.Probably the most disturbing movie that I've ever seen with virtually zero disturbing images.

I heard that Salo (100 Days Of Sodom)was pretty disgusting.

For doco's,I would put movies like Jesus Camp and The Bridge up there.
